There are four upayas in Yoga (Only short description)

Anupaya

Shambavopaya

Shaktopaya

Anavopaya

Anupaya is the path of no path for those when the divine grace is

naturally present.

Shambavopaya

This is for people who by the power of will can transcend the vikalpa

world and enjoy ananda. The power of will is not something exclusively

reserved to males.

Shaktopaya:

This is for people with strong vikalpa tendencies. They use the power

of some shudha vikalpa which is used as the boat to cross over the

river or sea of vikalpa. The worship of shakti in the form of mother

comes under this catgeory. It(Mother) comes from the word matrika

which is used to describe various groups of shaktis represented by

various sounds.

Anupaya

Still lower who identify almost with the physical body, Asana practice

etc.
