A Word on Gender -- especially for Devi Bhakta

For what it's worth, I realized recently (having been told by a

long-standing member, off-list, with a grin and a wink) that Devi Bhakta is no

woman but a Man !!!

Oh my !!! ;-) All this time -- all these years I have always

thought, because of the Name Devi, that he is a woman. Devi has been very

gracious

to me over the years, when intermittently we have talked.

Devi has been a member ( as has Nora ) on my original group,

Sophia, for a long time, before I took it down and had to put it back

up

again.

All these things have transpired and all this time has passed.

Looking back I see where there have been little "clues" that I simply

overlooked.

When I discovered this great truth, that Devi Bhakta is a man, what

did I feel?

Should I apologize for mistaking a man for a woman, over the net where

one cannot see the body?

I feel not. To apologize would be to insinuate it is better to be a

man than a woman and to be thought a woman is an insult, and it is not.

This group is devoted to Shaktism, and for that I experience this

group as a Presense of the Feminine Divine on the internet.

As for Devi, I think not better or worse of him for being a man.

Just a little surprised !

Just my two Cents worth,

Blessings,

Cathie

Should you apologize for mistakenly thinking someone is a man or a woman

on an internet list such as this? Of course not. If people keep calling you

on making one presumption after another that turn out to be false, is it time

for a bit of self-examination? Perhaps so.

Dear Cathie:

Well, the name Devi Bhakta means "devotee of the

Goddess",and " is the masculine for "devotee", so the

clue was there all along, it is simply that you don't

know Sanskrit! I believe the feminine of "bhakta" is

bhaktini".Indian men seem to have no problem with

carrying around female deity-names,though, but it is

not common, I have noticed, for women to have the

names of male deities. I have seen men named

"Saraswati" but I do not recall seeing any woman

carrying around the name "Krishna", for instance. This

is not to say it doesn't happen, just that it seems

relatively rare.

Yes. I just figured that part out. Devi Bhakta means a devotee of Devi.

*grins* I always knew that Devi Bhakta was male. All that the name told me

was that he was a Goddess [Devi] Devotee [bhakta], correct me if I am

wrong...is that what the name means? :)

No worries though - there was someone that came across as feminine to me in

the past, just for me to find out that "she" was a he. Sometimes it is hard

to make any judgments (such as gender, etc) over the web.

;-)

Very interesting Lilith,

Interesting also that in America, it is ok for women to wear blue

jeans, but not for men to wear skirts!

Oy Vey ! When I was back in college, I remember how my brain would

turn to mush if I wore a skirt to class. Now I'm old hat. I could do just

about anything in that cheap $12 rit dyed wine red sleeveless summer dress,

including haul a wheelbarrow of sand up from the bottom corner of the yard, back

to

the top.

It always troubled me however, being so surrouned by the toxic womb of

so much Western Religion which has created a barren Wasteland Absence of the

Feminine Divine, to have to think exclusively in terms of male Divinity. And

you know, so much Christian Theology says a woman has to become like a man to

be saved.

So, very interesting indeed.

Hugz,

Cathie (who's prefer to have the name of a Female Deity ;-)

Yikes. Sorry about all that. I am aware that the ID has caused

confusion in the past. I considered changing it for a while, but was

told by most that this would create even *more* confusion at this

late date. So I suppose we're stuck with the ambiguity now. (Pretty

kinky, eh?) *lol*

But Lilith is right about the Sanskrit "clue." Another clue is the

big "M" next to gender on my Profile page. :-p

Saraswati can be an ordinary male first name (as in the famous old

classic film, "Saraswati Chandra"); but it can also be appended to a

monastic or initiatory name. Krishna can most certainly be a woman's

first name, and it is not an uncommon one, perhaps especially in West

Bengal. All in all, Hindus aren't too hung up on such matters.

in fact "Krishna" is the name of Subhadra wife of Arjuna.
