These symbolize her ruling over the five <bhutas> or elements (Earth, Water, Fire, Air, and Akasha). I've also heard that they symbolize the five syllables of her title, Pa-ram-esh-var-ee ("Supreme Lady"). Basic yantra of Kali as Parashakti is one downpointed triangle as Sharabhanga told. That is Yonyakara (Yoni-akara), vulva-shaped form. Besides there are MANY different specific Kali yantras, not only Dakshinakalika`s that has 5 triangles. That 5 mainly stand not for 5 elements - Shakti is far above these gross things! Although they are related to pancha-bhutas also. BTW they symbolize 15 Nitya-shaktis (5*3=15) as aspects of Kali. Lastly, the name Parameshvari is divided as "Pa-ra-me-shva-ri". Don`t kill sanskrit plz LOL. A.

Eight petal stand for ashtavargas. That is groups of matrikas starting from letters a, ka, cha, Ta, ta, pa, ya, sha. And these are corresponding to ashtamatrikas in the sense of eight goddesses (Brahmi, Maheshvari, Indrani etc); also to 8 Bhairavas (Asitanga, Ruru, Chanda etc) eight forms of Rudra etc. They can be seen as representing 8 forms of Kalika as well - Mahakali, Guhyakali, Shmashanakali etc. A.
