Guest guest
Dear All: I would like to know more about how to perform "Pitri Tarpana", the rite of honouring one's ancestors, I believe... Shri Vimalananda speaks very highly of the rite in his books. Would any of the Indian people out there be able to describe the ritual to me, that I might perform it? Lilith M. Guest guest
93 Pitri-tarpana has to be done ONLY by hindus. If U are not (and U are not) then there is no need. Also it is improper to imitate some dharma not being initiated into it. If U pass through all necessary samskaras and become hindu then U can do hindu rituals. For tantriks (that too those from yavanas) no pitri-tarpana is necessary. Guest guest
"If U pass through all > necessary samskaras > and become hindu then U can do hindu rituals" This is very fanatic. That is why people are leaving hinduism. The fact is you do not need to perform hindu rituals to be hindu. Hinduism bound to rituals is only for those following the 'bhakti marga '. How about if one follows the 'Gyan marga '. Everyone can perform Pitri tarpana, if you believe in it. I do not believe in that. Once the body is cremated it passes into the five "tatwa's". The ATMA remains and I am not responsible for the Shanti of any ATMA, also not of my parents (pitri). You need to perform good Karma for yourself. I am not a fanatic at all LOL. Myself i`m a kaula and i don`t believe in most hindu samskaras . > Everyone can perform Pitri tarpana, if you believe in > it. I do not believe in that. But smartic rituals are orthodox practices that are meant ONLY to orthodox hindus (= who had gone through necessary samskaras). Exactly like it is in judaism. Until U have passed giyur (if U are not a jew by birth) U cannot perform rituals. But U can be some kind of heterodox kabbalist (= jewish tantric )... A. Guest guest
Now!! now!! please lets not start on a new round of useless arguments. 1. "Hindu" - which I think is a word that was coined in early 19th Century or by the Arabs. I am not sure. One thing is sure though. IT IS NOT A WORD USED IN OLD INDIA TO DENOTE ANYTHING. And etymologically it just means people of the land of Indus. 2. What is now understood by the name "Hindu", in ancient days, included everything from adwaitin to dwaitin to nihilists. 3. Thus there is NO uniform code for "Hindu" as understood in Judaism, christianity and Islam. {This is just my personal view eh? (runs for cover)*smile*} 4. There are samskaras and what not for each group. Some common and some not so common. So there is no common rule on samskaras and what not but there are common elements thats all. Tarpana, Marjana and Homa are requirements for purascharana - every tantrik does it. And tantriks are absolutely Hindus. Perhaps you are referring to Sraddha, which is a ritual usually done by priests; but if someone wants to do it regardless of their background I dont see any problem; in fact only benefits arise. I will concur with you that a staunch catholic or any confirmed relgionist has no need and is better off not doing sraddha... -yogaman

Also without ANY homa/tarpana stuff. If U got from Ur guru upadesha to do purashcharana with homa - U do as he said (and NOT according to smriti). What "every tantric" does also depends on his guru, on sampradaya, on his own will and above all on Devi. What is sure that ritual purashcharana is not the most essential part of Tantra . Tantrikas are hindus is some sense. I wouldn`t say "absolutely"... > Perhaps you are referring to Sraddha, which is a ritual usually done > by priests; but if someone wants to do it regardless of their > background I dont see any problem; in fact only benefits arise. I said "PITRI-tarpana", right? "If someone wants to do it regardless of their background" - that`s thier right, but it is NOT supported by Shastras. It is NOT upasana, not dharma or whatsoever. That`s the only thing i wanted to tell. Of course, everyone is free to do shrAddha, kula-yAga, namaz, holy mass and the ritual of pentagram at the same time LOL. A. Guest guest
Actually i agree ; for a kaula the pitru kriya may nt be very relevant because who is his pitru? Genetic ancestors? But he has given them up when he took deeksha and further 21 generations up and own are supposed to have got "moksha" when he takes deeksha. So where is the pitru u are trying to propitiate?
