This temple is well-known for being perhaps the most extreme in its erotic depictions. Many of the Tantra-oriented temples were destroyed by the Muslims in the 1500's and 1600's, but Khajuraho is a bit further south and located in what was then a hostile tribal area, so it managed to survive.
