If anyone should have had a long life and a quick painless death, one would have thought it would be Kali's supreme devotee..but not so! If you are worshiping a Deity in order to gain material benefit, then you cannot be said to be a true devotee at all, just a "fair-weather friend"!. The true acid test of one's devotion to God is to keep to that devotion no matter what circumstances one is faced with. Withdrawing one's devotion in the face of one's own suffering just shows one's own true agenda! Ramakrishna lived-and died!-to teach people the meaning of true devotion to God. What sort of example would he have set had he suddenly renounced his devotion because he was suffering as millions had suffered? Suffering is a fact of life, and it is a conviction of mine that bearing one's suffering patiently and dispassionately is a powerful form of karmic balancing. To be angry and bitter with one's lot in life (which is, after all, the fruit of one's very own karma), and worse, to die in such a state is to egotistically "burn up" the spiritual energy potential contained in the experience that would have otherwise gone to "pay" towards one karmic debt...thus the wheel of suffering continues round and round, just as if one had spent money on oneself that was intended to pay a debt that one owed to another.
