Guest guest
Namaste, As many of you know, I am in the U.S. and I'm a bit of an activist. Some of you are also in the U.S. and may be able to help with this attempt to keep our fellow countrymen more informed of our affects worldwide, in this case in India. While my prayers are with the sufferers, my feet are here on the ground and I wanted to do something to increase awareness. What follows is the text of the email that I sent to my friends. As this is a very serious matter, I apologize if my tone is at all frivolous in this message. December 3 this year marks the 20th anniversary of the world's worst industrial "accident" which happened at Bhopal, India, when a Union Carbide plant released a cloud of gas that settled on the nearby town and killed thousands of people that night, and caused a lifetime of suffering for the survivors as well as continuing serious birth defects for the children that have been born since. Union Carbide has since been purchased by Dow Chemical. There are many ways to inform yourself about this tragedy and take positive action to obtain justice for the victims and to ensure that the lack of regard for human life by multinational corporations is not profitable, and is punishable. I encourage you to be creative and to discuss this with the people in your life. Additionally, BBCWorldwide is showing a documentary about the event that BBCAmerica is not carrying. Since this is a disaster caused by an American based company, it is important that it be seen here, in America. The documentary is called "One Night in Bhopal." I urge you to contact BBCAmerica and request that they show the documentary on BBCAmerica. They will tell you that BBCAmerica is not BBCWorldwide and you may have to explain things to the person who answers the phone....but that's just another opportunity to educate! If you call, as I did, it is a long distance, not toll free number, so you may wish to contact them another way. I've copied the contact information from their website here. Thanks for listening.
