The college that I may go to next year carries some "Hindi" courses, one of

them even involving Sanskrit! I am so happy that I have a start on learning

Sanskrit.

I have some questions, though. Should I have a "pure Sanskrit" class to

understand Sanskrit, or does "Hindi" offer enough insight on learning enough

Sanskrit to read and understand Indian scriptures?

I already asked the head of the Modern-Language department some questions, I

just am wondering if there is more I need to ask.

Thanks and Blessings,

Anya

Dearest Anya,

First of all, I smile when I think of how lucky you are you have such a

strong interest at an early age like you do- Lucky you!!!

You want to understand Indian Scriptures? Perhaps even Sankrit ones? The good

news is they are available in many Indian languages and also quite a lot in

English! You don't need the Sanskrit unless you want to learn them in their

perfect tounge and sing many of them too!

Personally, I would go with the Hindi. Sanskrit is pretty heavy and can get

very involved. I say this because I know you are studying psychology and have

many aspiriations there. Sanskrit is a big deal, but remember there are even

older languages in India's South and a fountain of knowledge there. Right now

you can't possibly know which direction you may go in a few years ;-)

With Hindi, you will recieve an excellent introduction to Indian culture. If

you decide to visit the country you can travel throughout the north without

difficult since most people will be speaking their native language as well as

Hindi.

The main thing is, you can practice right now! all the time with Indian

friends, through watching movies etc. It will be easier for you. Also, I learned

the Bangla script and sounds much faster because of my prior knowledge of Hindi.

The scripts are very similar, as well as the scripts for Marathi, Gujarati, Pu

njabi etc.

These are just some of my thoughts ;-)

Actually learning Hindi may not help learn sanskrit. Other than the script and

some words (changed of course) there is no commonality. However if u were to

learn malayalam, it will be excellent as Malayalam is highly sanskritised.
