Caitlin, Reese,

The same peace that I find sitting at the lotus feet of the mother was felt when

I climbed the Arunachala mountain in Tiruvannamalai. The domain of Shiva, Sri

Ramana Maharishi. Check out his publications by Arthur Osborne. The countless

sages that India produced (so to say) makes this country the most mystical of

them all.

Some time ago, I was in Maharishi's ashram which is 4.30 hours from Chennai, I

came across a beautiful French lady with her 1 year old son Ananda (joy). After

some time, when she visited us in Mumbai I asked her what brought her to the

ashram so far away from France. To which she replied "First of all, you took 35

hours to reach the ashram whereas I took half the time. So it is not far for me.

Two, where else to go? Three, to know who I am".

Scholars such as Dr. Paul Brunton, Richard Schiffman and many others got an

opportunity to spend time with the greatest devotees in form of sages like Sri

Ramakrishna Paramhamsa and Sri Ramana Maharishi. The epic works of realisation

that they have left behind are the fruits we nibble on.

P.S. All of you, lay your hands on I Am That - translations of tape recordings

with Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj by Mr. Sudhakar Dixit of Chetana Prakashan

(Publishing). A classic work on Advaita Vedanta. Also highly recommend The

Tripura Rahasya. This is available in any of Sri Ramana ashrams all across the

world. A masterpiece.

Satyen,

I had the good fortune to attend their Annual Kali Puja last year, but I'm

not connected to them per say. I love their website too, it's so rare to

find a beautiful site with substance. I'm actually a member of SHARANYA

(www.sharanya.org ) Devi Mandir in San Francisco (The same temple that

Reese, who has posted some on this list, is also a member).

Jai Maa!

Jai Maa Kali

Hi Caitlin,

You would not be connected to the people of Dakshineswari Kali of Laguna

Beach (California), would you?

Their website is quite fascinating and content is good too. Nora might have

already seen this one.

Jai Maa Kali.

How Did Animals Escape Tsunami?

----------

----

from Wired.com

Wild animals seem to have escaped the Indian Ocean tsunami, adding weight to

notions they possess a sixth sense for disasters, experts said Thursday.

Sri Lankan wildlife officials have said the giant waves that killed over

24,000 people along the Indian Ocean island's coast seemingly missed wild

beasts, with no dead animals found.

"No elephants are dead, not even a dead hare or rabbit," said H.D.

Ratnayake, deputy director of Sri Lanka's Wildlife Department. "I think

animals can sense disaster. They have a sixth sense. They know when things

are happening."

The waves washed floodwaters up to two miles inland at Yala National Park in

the ravaged southeast, Sri Lanka's biggest wildlife reserve and home to

hundreds of wild elephants and several leopards.

NMadasamy wrote: The fighting etc. between Devi and BhandAsura is

fully described in the LalitopAkhyAna. Concerning the burning of

Manmatha, it is said in the same work,' GanEsa, the skilful worker,

seeing the ashes of the god of love, made from them a beautifully

formed man. BrahmA on seeing this action, said, `Well done, well

done' [bhanda, bhanda], hence in the world he is called Bhanda" The

fierce quality (asurtva ) is explained in the name Pr., "as the

powerful Bhanda sprang from the fire of Rudra's anger, his nature

is terrible [raudra] hence he is the terrible one [dAnava]".

I wish to point out with regards to this statement. I have clarify

this with Bhasurananda Natha and that it should be Chitrakarma and

not Ganesa. Reference to LakitopAkhyAna, it goes as follows :

Birth of Bhandasura

150. At this point of time, Chitrakarma, the commander of one of the

Rudra Ganas (Gana = troupe) one day started toying with the ash of

the burnt Manmatha and prepared a doll out of it. He took this doll

to Lord Shiva.

151. Lord Shiva's intentions are indeed unfathomable. As soon as

the doll neared Lord Shiva, it sprang to life and the boy thus born

prostrated before Lord Shiva and Chitrakarma.

152. Chitrakarma was overwhelmed with joy. He gave the boy the

Upadesha of Shata-Rudreeya Mantra and asked him to undertake penance.

153. When the penance reached the stage of fruition, Lord Shiva

appeared before him. He asked Lord Shiva to grant him a special

boon "anyone who fights against me should immediately lose half

of his strength and that strength should be added to my strength.

None of the weapons of my opponents should be able to bind me"

was

his request. Immediately Lord Shiva granted the boon and added,

"I

am also bestowing on you the boon of ruling the kingdom for sixty

thousand years". After giving these boons, Lord Shiva disappeared.

154. He became surprised and a bit apprehensive by the words of Lord

Shiva. But soon he forgot it.

155. Lord Brahma, who was witnessing all this, grew frustrated and

swore "BhandBhand" (meaning shame, shame). From

then on, he got the name "Bhanda". Because of his qualities

he

became an Asura (demon) and entered the domain of Asuras. This is

how he got the name `Bhandasura'.

LalithA SahasranAma: mahA pAsupatAstrAgni nirddagdhAsura sainikA

LalithA SahasranAma: mahA pAsupatAstrAgni nirddagdhAsura sainikA

mahA pAsupatAstrAgni nirddagdhAsura sainikA : She burnt up the army

of Daithyas with the fire of the astra called MahApAsupata.

This MahApAsupata-mantra is different from the six-syllabled

PasupatAstra-mantra. The former belongs to SadAsiva and the latter

to Isvara. The Linga P says, "from Rudra to PisAcas are called

Pasus, as Siva is the lord of these, he is called Pasupati [Lord of

Pasus]" hencec this mantra belongs to SadAsiva.

Or the fire of MahApAsupata weapons, the highest mental

modifications connected with non-duality, which arise progressively

according to the progressinve practice [of the devotion]

The army of the Daityas, the mental modifications, connected with

ignorance.
