Guest guest
Kheer Bhawani, (Jammu and Kashmir), INDIA (Jan 8, 2005): Thousands of Indian devotees cutting across caste and creed are thronging the Kheer Bhawani temple in Jammu and Kashmir. An ideal example of Hindu-Muslim amity, the shrine is situated at Tullamulla, 24 kilometers north of Srinagar. The pilgrims, mainly from northern region, make a beeline to the temple early in the morning amidst tight security arrangements. "We came to know of this famous and ancient temple. So we decided to visit the temple. We felt really nice," said Deepa Singh, a tourist from New Delhi. Temple priest Bhushan Lal Pandita said: "Tourists visiting the famous resorts of Gulmarg and Sonmarg also visit here. We conduct prayers at this holy shrine." The marble stone temple is dedicated to goddess Rajnya Devi, popularly known as Kheer Bhawani because of the thousands of devotees who offer milk and "Kheer" pudding to the sacred spring which, devotees believe, turns black to warn of impending disaster. The devotees fast and gather here on the eighth day of the full moon in the month of May when, according to the belief, the goddess changes the colour of the spring's waters. The temple was built by Kashmir's ruler Maharaja Pratap Singh in 1912 and later renovated by Maharaja Hari Singh.
