Uttara-Kaula tends to focus on the Goddess as a 16 year old virgin girl ~ so this practice is "left". Purva-Kaula tends to focus on the Goddess as rightful consort and ultimate Mother ~ so this practice is "right".

As U understand, in dakshina-marga Devi is Mother, in vama She is Shakti (Beloved or consort). Thus, in the first case we have vatsalya-rasa, in second - shringara. But what is the basis of Ur statement abt uttara-kaula? Never heard that. Besides, when Devi is invoked in woman's body in the time of kula-yaga, She cannot be viewed as kumarika, She must be either wife or parakiya. Shodashi ("16 year old") as far as i know is not seen as a virgin as well. Even Bala has many erotic epithets, not to say abt Shodashi. The only issue i saw in scripture that speaks abt sexual ritual with a virgin - that was in "Pranatoshini". But that practice seems to be not common among kaulas; it must be some odd local custom . That passage didn't associate mentioned practice with uttara-kaula or whatsoever. Thus, Ur statement seem to be rather strange... Anyway, i will be glad if U continue. Maybe i don't catch something. Best regards, A.
Guest guest
Uttara-Kaula tends to focus on the Goddess as the ravishing yet entirely pure and virginal Shodashi ~ so this practice is said to be "left", by comparison with the earlier and eastern Purva-Kaula traditions. Northern Uttara-Kaula Shri Vidya was later transferred to the South. Surely, ravishing the Virgin is a more "left-handed" practice than uniting with the Mother! What i do not understand is the sourse of the statement abt correlation of virgin with uttara-kaula. Could U plz tell where U got it from? Interesting, 'coz i never came across any references to that... Regards, A.
