will post some excerpts here soon, from Susan Sered's

book "Women Of The Sacred Groves, Divine Priestesses [Kamisama]

of Okinawa"

where she says:

"With the exception of the indigenous religion of Okinawa

(Ryuku Islands), all known religions led by women are comprised

only of women and/or are considered marginal, subordinate, or

secondary in the societies in which they are located."

"Only on the Ryuku Islands do women lead the official mainstream

religion -- Okinawan women are the acknowledged and respected

leaders of the publicly supported and publicly funded indigenous

religion in which both men and women participate."

"Okinawa is the only known society in which women's religious

endeavors are neither reactive to nor a consequence of those

of men: men do not oversee, define, circumscribe, or persecute

women's religious leadership in Okinawa."

Millennium Twain

....

[in the book, from 1999, Susan displays NO spiritual

awareness at all -- only a GREAT confusion about religion

and society -- no discussions or understanding of the thoughts

and purposes of the Kamisama (the shamanistas) and the

universal cosmos of spirits of the tree and all shrines,

temples, bodies. nevertheless the book is VERY helpful

in beginning a search connecting the cultures of Polynesia,

Asia and the planet for those of us who DO walk in the

realm of the unbounded living spirit ...]
