Petrina Stocker, 42, was convicted Thursday of killing her nine-year-old son David by putting 18 teaspoons of salt into his hospital drip. Prosecutors said Stocker suffers from Munchausen's syndrome by proxy, a psychological disorder in which parents cause illnesses in a child to draw attention to themselves. David Stocker was treated at London's Great Ormond Street Hospital in 2001 for loss of appetite and lethargy. Lawyers said doctors had become concerned that Stocker was making her son ill, but that she kept a bedside vigil which prevented them from discovering what was wrong with the boy. Prosecuting attorney Nicholas Hilliard said Stocker put blood into the boy's urine samples and manufactured vomit samples, as well as interfering with his intravenous drip. The boy died in August 2001. "The episode of salt poisoning was the last in a series of acts done in an attempt to fabricate aspects of David's illness and to produce manufactured or misleading symptoms," he said. Passing sentence at London's Central Criminal Court, judge Gerald Gordon said "there has to be some force, incomprehensible to me and most people, driving a mother to behave towards their own child as you did to David." The hospital's chief executive, Dr. Jane Collins, said security has been reviewed since the boy's death. "Our surveillance policy can be considered lacking in some ways," she said. "What we didn't do was to make sure everything going into David, i.e. the feeds, could not be tampered with in any way whatsoever."
