Namaste prainbow,

I misspelled the transliteration before. The sapoddhara mantra is the

mantra which removes the curses. One of its uses is to remove all the

curses which have been spoken against Devi. Here is a rough

transliteration (It would be nice to have diacritical marks in

email!):

OM HRIM KLIM SHRIM KRAM KRIM CANDIKADEVYAI SHAPANASHANUGRAHAM KURU KURU SVAHA

Typically, like all mantras, one must be taught the mantra, to learn

proper pronunciation and usage. Email is a woefully imperfect medium

for such things. And typically, there are layers of meaning that may

be unlocked through practice, and through work with a qualified

teacher.

Say this mantra 11 times, or 108 times, or 1008 times. I've placed

here an English phonetic translation, with emphasis for speaking.

A-U-M HREEM KLEEM SHREEM KRAAM KREEM CHUHN-di-KAH DEYV-yai

SHAH-puh-NAH-SHAH-noo-gruh-HUM kooROO kooROO SVA-HAH

And here's a translation (this is a translation by Chandra and myself

from the Sanskrit):

1) A-U-M: birth, life, death, then transformation; or earth's center,

earth's surface, sky, then emptiness.

2) hreem: – the absolute, all-encompassing goddess Kali; Maya, She who

lifts the veil of illusion; purification and transformation; the

mantra of the heart

3) kleem: the energy that attracts other energy and increases; Kali; Kama

4) shreem: beauty, light and wealth; Lakshmi

5) kraam: destruction of unhealthy attachments; Tara

6) kreem: bija mantra of Kali; action, transformation

7) chuhn-di-kah: the goddess Candika (Durga); She who transforms; She

who tears apart thought.

8) dayv-yai: to Goddess

9) shah-puh-nah-shah-noo-gruh-hum: curse + destruction

+grace/favor/kindness = the grace, favor, or kindness of destroying the

curses

10) koo-roo koo-roo: Do it; it will be done

("By Her grace, the curses are destroyed")

11) SVAH-HAH: I affirm my relationship to Her, and my essential identity

with Her (emphatic); surrender to the energy of the universe, becoming

one with Her.

It precedes the utkilana mantra, and is part of the Chandi Path, or

the Durga Saptashati, found in the Devi Mahatmyam. There are numerous

other translations. A popular one is by Swami Satyananda Saraswati in

the book Chandi Path, which is meant to be a devotional text. His

translation of the mantra is:

"OM all existence, transformation, Increase, the Cause of Dissolution

in the Gross Body, the Cause of Dissolution in the Causal Body, to the

Goddess, She Who Tears Apart Thoughts, take away the curse, take away

the curse, I am One with God!"

There are others. I prefer breaking it down for people piece by piece,

as I think it's important to really know what you're saying when you

are repeating a mantra.

sa'ham,

Erin

In many mantras there is an inbuilt lock (I am speaking in modern lingo *smile*)

keeping the power locked. while many mantras are well known the shapoddhara or

the key to the lock is guarded and given but slowly by the teacher. Some

shapoddharas are also open but still the procedure is not well known. These are

necessary to prevent the sudden release of energy that can be destructive in

untrained hands.

Its like having a conrolled nuclear reaction in a nuclear reactor to generate

electricity versus the nuclear bomb where the reaction is uncontrolled.
