The actual procedure to perform Nyasa is not explained in this page. I really want to know the procedure. Please help me.

Click the goddess image on the e-group main page, or go to http://shaktisadhana.50megs.com/Khadgamala.html Here's another source for another version: Subscribe to / go to Files -> Beginner Shiva Puja download Beginner Puja.doc You will probably also want the Siva Puja Beginner booklet ISBN 1-887472-88-6 $10.00 and possibly the companion CD Shiva Beginner Puja $15.00 http://www.shreemaa.org/ The following is excerpted from the Beginner Puja.doc, which is/was written by a devotee of Swami Satyananda and Shree Maa: There are several Nyasas- in [this beginner's version of a Shiva Puja] [...] we focus on two kinds- Kara Nyas – which means establishment of the bija on the fingers, and Anga Nyas – which means establishment of the bija on the body. Let us focus on Kara Nyas [...]. Touch the top of your thumb with the top of your index finger and recite "om nam angushtabhyam namaha" Touch the top of your thumb with the top of your index finger and recite " om mah tarjanibhyam swaha" Touch the top of your thumb with the top of your middle finger and recite "om shim madhyamabhyam vashat" Touch the top of your thumb with the top of your ring finger and recite "om vam anamikabhyam hum" Touch the top of your thumb with the top of your little finger and recite "om yah kanishthikabhyam vaushat" And yes, you would do both the hands at the same time. Here is how we roll our hands. Fold your arms in front of your chest - left hand closer to your body. Keep a space between your hands and your chest for movement of the hands. When you say "karatala kara" - roll your hands clockwise around each other When you say "prshtabhyam", - roll your hands anticlockwise around each other And then "astraya" - roll your hands clockwise once more "phat" - clap your hands. There, you have sealed "NaMaShiVaYa" in your hands and from now on everything you touch is filled with Shiva. [....] The second Nyas [....] [in this puja] is the Anga Nyas. Anga means part – in this case part of the body. [....] So, we form a tattva mudra with our right palms. Make the top of the thumb touch the base of the right finger to form this mudra. With the right hand in this position "om nam hrdayaya namah" – touch your heart "om mah sirase swaha" – touch the top of your head "om sim shikayai vausat" – with hand still in position 2 (top of the head), extend the thumb backwards to touch the head. "om vam kavacaya hum"- make tattva mudras with both hands and cross in front of your body, as though you were hugging yourself. "om yah netratrayaya vausat" – point to your three eyes – your little finger will point to your left eye, the middle finger will point to the right eye, and the pinky finger will point to the third eye. Note – you will not actually touch your eye but rather point to them. And then of course "karatala…. Phat" where you would roll your forearms forwards and backwards and end with a clap. Guest guest
Below is an example (offered by my guru, Sri Karunamayi, written by one of her devotees) of how to perform Nyasa before reciting the Khadga Mala Sotram. I hope that it is helpful in understanding the rite: Jai ma! Mark Kara Nyasa Aim angushthabhyam namaha While saying this phrase, place the nails of your forefingers at the base of your thumbs (on the side of the palms of your hands). Then, gently and slowly, trace a line with the nails from the base to the tip of your thumbs. The right forefinger should be on the right thumb, and the left forefinger on the left thumb.(Angushtham means thumb) Klim tarjanibhyam namaha While saying this phrase, place the nails of your thumbs at the base of your forefingers; slowly trace a line with the thumbnails from the base to the tip of your forefingers. (Right thumbnail on right forefinger, etc.) (Tarjani means forefinger) Sauhu madhyamabhyam namaha Place the nails of your thumbs at the base of your middle fingers; slowly trace a line with the thumbnails from the base to the tip of your middle fingers. (Madhya means middle) Aim anamikabhyam namaha Place your thumbnails at the base of your ring fingers; slowly trace a line from the base to the tip of your ring fingers. (Anamika refers to the ring finger, literally it means "the finger without a name") Klim kanishtikabhyam namaha Place your thumbnails at the base of your pinkie fingers; slowly trace a line from the base to the tip of your pinkie fingers. (kanishtika refers to the pinkie finger) Sauhu karatala karaprushthabhyam namaha Using the backs of your right fingernails, gently trace lines from the base of the left palm (or some even go to elbow) to the left fingertips. Now do the same, using the left fingertips on the right palm (or elbow). Do 2-3 times, until you've finished saying "Sauhu karatala…namaha". Anga Nyasa Aim hrudayaya namaha While saying this phrase, place the fingertips of both hands gently over your heart. (Hrudaya means heart) Klim sirase swaha While saying this phrase, place the fingertips of both hands over the front of your head, about where the hairline is in the center. (Sirah refers to the energy-center on the top-front of the head) Sauhu sikhayai vashat While saying this phrase, place the fingertips of both hands over the back-top of your head, about where a man would have the circular "hair-swirl". (Sikha refers to the energy-center on the back-top of the head) Aim kavachaya hum While saying this phrase, place the right fingertips on your right shoulder, and the left fingertips on your left shoulder. (Kavacha literally means "armor", and refers to the shoulders and upper arms) Klim netratrayaya vaushat While saying this phrase, place the second, third and fourth fingertips of the right hand on your 3 eyes as follows: with your eyes closed, gently touch the forefinger to the right eye, the ring finger to the left eye, and let the middle finger touch the forehead between the eyes (the third eye). (Netra means eye, and traya refers to 3) Sauhu astraya phat While saying this, trace a clockwise circle around your body using your right hand. Clockwise as if you were looking down on your head from above. As you say "phat", you can clap your hands loudly and decisively either once or 3 times. Clapping loudly is considered to break up any stagnant or negative energy patterns in the room, and to scatter any uncooperative entities in the area. So do this with a firm will and determination that nothing is going to deter you from your purpose of chanting Mother's sacred names. (Astra means a fiery missile, so here we are tracing a subtle circular shield of fire, to protect us while we practice. Phat is a powerful sound of expelling and repelling negative energy.) Bhurbhuvas suvarom iti digbandhaha While saying this, you can again pass your right hand in a clockwise circle above and around your body. While doing this, you can snap your fingers. Traditionally, ones snaps in each of the 10 directions (front, front-right, right, right-back, back, left-back, left, front-left, up, and down). But you can just snap a bunch of times and mentally think of the 10 directions. ("Bhurbhuvassuvarom" contains 4 words, bhuhu, bhuvaha, suvaha, and Om. These are the same 4 words in the first line of Gayatri Mantra. I'm not sure of the significance of this. Bhuhu refers to the Earth, bhuvaha refers to the next level or loka, and suvaha refers to a level higher than that, like a heaven or astral realm. So maybe we are making reference to all the realms in all 10 directions. Digbandhaha refers to the 10 directions.) Snapping performs a similar function to clapping, and stimulates the subtle nervous system, especially in the ring finger, which contains nectar. By snapping in all directions, we protect ourselves from unnecessary intrusions that might come from any direction. For Khadgamala, another dhyana sloka comes after this, and then the Panchabhuta Puja. >"msbauju" <msbauju > > > Re: Nyasa >Mon, 04 Apr 2005 19:01:23 -0000 > > >, "ammabantu" <ammabantu> >wrote: > > > > http://www.shaktisadhana.org/Resource/Messageboard/Nyaasa.html > > > > [....] The actual procedure to perform Nyasa is not > > explained in this page. Guest guest
Oops! As I re-read what I sent, it looks as if there is missing 1 final action towards the end of the description of Nyasa. This is how I was taught to complete the Nyasa. Sorry, here it is: The devotee is to snap fingers over head 3 X in a clockwise circle like this: Bhur (1st snap overhead) bhuva (2nd snap) suvarom (3rd snap)it digbandhaha Here you are tying an imaginary knot (bandha) to seal and contain the energy and protective shield you've just created by completing the Nyasa!!! I should probably not send things out while I'm also working!!! Sorry for any confusion! Mark
