Greetings:

Is Sanskrit taught in India only by gurus, or is it taught in schools, either as

a

requirement or elective? I have read that Sanskrit is to Indian languages and

peoples

as Latin is to English language/peoples. I think Latin may be taught in

parochial

(religious) schools now here in the U.S., and maybe in some public schools,

though

not in the majority. Which is too bad, because Latin is used in law and other

disciplines here. Is Sanskrit used in India in various disciplines, or in

spiritual

traditions "only"? I guess the legal system in India is based on the English

legal

system. Is this correct? Hope you don't mind all the questions; they came after

contemplation of your post.

Regards,

Mary Ann

Sanskrit is taught in many schools and is a optional language course work for

schools.

Hindu religous schools have their own sanskrit classes.

Sanskrit can be had by distance education from Rastriya Sanakrit Sanastan - a

govt. sponcered organisation.

Sanskrit as a subject is available for study at american Universities as well as

private intitutions in USA.

Sanskrit encompasses everything from science to spirituality to art.

There are Universities where sanskrit is the main suject. Example Sri Sankara

Sanskrit University in Kalady Kerala. There are also other major learning

centres for sanskrit.
