Devotees Flock to Goddess Durga on Eighth Day of Navratri

New Delhi, Apr. 17 (ANI): Hundreds of devotees in New Delhi flocked

temples of Goddess Durga to mark the eighth day of 'Navratri', on

Sunday.

 

The devotees of Goddes Durga observe fast during the Navratri and

break it on the eighth day. Devotees flock temples from early hours

in the morning to pay respect to the Goddess. The significance of

the eighth day is the offering of food to little girls, who are also

called Kanchki.

 

In every home 'Puri, chana and halwa' are prepared and offered to

nine small girls, considered as Goddess Durga. The girls, after

having the meal, give blessings of prosperity and goodwill to family

members.

 

"We have been coming here for the past nine days. Today is the

eighth day and we offer 'halwa' and 'chana' to Goddess Durga. Ninth

day is the end of the festival," said Gurinder Kaur, a devotee.

 

Devotees believe that the eighth day is auspicious as wishes asked

from the Goddess on this day are considered to be fulfilled.

 

"I get peace of mind to pay obeisance to goddess. Everybody's wish

gets fulfilled on worshipping goddess and especially on eighth day.

Today, we worship nine small girls and offer prayers to Goddess

Durga," said Nandini, a devotee.

 

The nine-night festival is observed twice a year, once in the

beginning of the summer and the other at the onset of winter.

OMG, am I out of touch. I didn't realize it was Navdurga and here I was on a
