A tribute to the resiliency of childhood and the restorative power of art, Born into Brothels is a portrait of several unforgettable children who live in the red light district of Calcutta, where their mothers work as prostitutes. Zana Briski, a New York-based photographer, gives each of the children a camera and teaches them to look at the world with new eyes. The film, released by THINKFilm, premiered theatrically at the Film Forum in New York City in December 2004. It has since opened in over one hundred theatres nationwide. It will premiere on HBO/Cinemax in July 2005. http://www.bornintobrothels.com and http://www.johnmcdowell.net
Guest guest
Namaste Everyone- I still have to see Born Into Brothels-I've heard it's extremely powerful. Another recommendation I want to make is "Bride and Prejudice" - a Bollywood take on "Pride and Prejudice." It's a really fun movie:) Jai Maa! ~Reese >"msbauju" <msbauju > > > Re: Short Cut to Nirvana - Kumbh Mela; Also "Born >Into Brothels" >Fri, 22 Apr 2005 20:15:04 -0000 > > >, Body Temple <bodytemple@a...> >wrote: > > [....] > > short cut to nirvana is [an] award-winning film [....] > >You can see the trailer for _Short Cut to Nirvana_ and a list of >current venues at >http://www.melafilms.com > >And here's another interesting film: > >[from the website; see link below:] >Award-winning film "Born into Brothels" > >Born into Brothels, by Ross Kauffman and Zana Briski, is the winner >of the 77th annual Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature.
