Guest guest
What does that mean exactly, if it's metaphorical?? Jalandhara means the bearer of the net. A net is the magic power of illusion (or Maya shakti) also symboling the cycle of rebirth. The wielder of the net is the same as the possseor of maya. Visnu and siva indra and others also are possesors of the Magic power of the Jala (Net) (not only the demon jalandhara-he is a demon because he is attached to magic powers) It is because of the special kind of magic only a Bearer of Jala has that deities can appear in stone or plants. Jala and Mayashakti are the same that is why the women appear in the legend. Shankara in his commentary to svetasvasara Upanishad said: jalavan mayavitih arthah The wielder of the net is the posseor of maya. This is sufficent explanation i belive to understand the story. You must understand that story that have happenend in the world of the gods long ago are marked like signs to be forever present in our world now. Guest guest
Dear Mary......... Might sound BS to you but for a beleiver it is not. I guess we all understand that none of us were alive at the time when the scriptures were written and here I am talking about all religious scriptures not necessarily Hindu ones..........since we are beleivers we follow what is written. I do not know in what scripture this piece has been written but I beleive in this completely. Are not movie actors larger than life? And dont we forget our worries when we are watching them enact on screen?? Maybe the learned men of that era created larger then life heros to explain to the common man various aspects of life at that time.........this opinion is only meant for you in case you feel I was talking about actors and sharing a script....for the rest I am a firm beleiver in GOD no matter what form he is in front of me. I feel this happened for a common man to understand the difference between good and bad. Similarly there are other stories or legends given in various scriptures which depict a similar scenario. If I come across I would definitely share with you. There is a lot of mention wherein GOD first gave a boon to his disciple and then when he saw that the boon or power was being misused he used to take birth in some form to finish the misuser. To do this he had to use deception at times but then he always used to make up for it and we continue to worship those incidents till date. So this particular incident was one of deception but then GOD still made up for it and we pray to the Shri Salagram and Tulsi till date. Dear Eve is right that females usually pray to Tulsi while males pray to Salagram. I am sure you must be aware that apart from being highly spiritually regarded there are also a lot of medical properties in Tulsi (Basil). I hope I have not offended anybody by writing all the above. Please correct me if I am wrong. I am not as learned as all of you are and presently taking small steps towrds Shakti......have been more of a Shiva bhakta till now but know that till Shakti and Bhakti are together will not reach my goal. I am here to know more about Shakti. Forgive me if I am wrong in my interpretation. Om Namah Shivaye!! Women have Tulsi, which men don't worship. They marry the Tulsi and Shalagrama in big ceremonies.
