Mary Ann What is up with California and spiritual trends? I always make jokes about how every freakish New Age, or Spiritual trend in America always starts in California! Now in Philadelphia I just heard that there are "oxygen bars" where people can go and breathe flavoured air. My friend was telling me this and I said " let me guess, it started in California" he then replied by asking "how did you know???"

Guest guest
We have a pretty good mix, Lars. Naturally heaviest representation among Indians and Diaspora, but really good numbers of people from every corner of the globe. Lots of U.S. and Canada, as you noted, but Europe is well represented. Anyway, I put up a poll so that people could place themselves, at least but continent or country. The more members respond, naturally, the more useful and accuirate the poll will be. So please vote, everyone! Thanks DB , Lars Hedström <lars@2...> wrote: > Hi > > It would be interesting to find out where people on the list live. > > Usually you find most americans on the net, so I hope we have other people here also. > > I live in Scandinavia (Sweden). > > Regards > > Lars

The bars have been popular for years in polluted industrial Far East cities like Beijing and Tokyo." > What is up with California and spiritual trends? Good question. Perhaps spiritual teachers prefer to live and teach in a place with mild weather. (I am partly kidding....) Possibly that trend got started way back when when higher education was free in California, resulting in a growth in the university and college populations.... Guest guest
Just a stupid question. The poll question is where one is from??? May be an addition to ask where one is might also be an interesting data. Also a database can be created for each member to add those data - of course on a voluntary basis. Guest guest
Dear Friends, Please forgive me, but I believe that the poll has been worded in a misleading way. “Where do you live” is not the same thing as “where are you from”, especially when we are dealing with Hinduism. I think you may be aware of the prejudice of many Hindus regarding the concept of jati. Jati is the definition of material bodily identification mistakenly considered as the only qualification for being Hindu, or “having the right” to cultivate Sanatana Dharma or whatever is connected to “Indian” culture. So we have many people who are originally from Indian families, and live in “diaspora”, who have no real information of what is going on in India. They may even have no affinity for Vedic civilization or Hinduism – although I believe that members from Shakti Sadhana group are not in this category. On the other side, we have many people who are originally from non-Indian families who have “converted” to Hinduism and are much stricter followers. Some have even chosen to live in India and sincerely dedicate themselves to the protection of genuine Dharma. PKD

Guest guest
North America is huge, and it's nice to get a bit more specific regarding locations, so I'm appreciating people's individual posts, too. But of course, how can we keep track? No Kochu, in Puerto Rico as in many other Latin American countries there are mostly Catholic Christians however their devotion sometimes exceeds what you would see here! Voudou has it's roots in African religion but was developed specifically in the island nation called Haiti. In Cuba there is a similar faith called Santeria which is basically a system that uses the Catholic saints in such a way where they correspond to older spirits known as Orisha. The trickster Exu becomes Ellegua in Cuba and Legba in Haiti, basically the same type of power, but with slightly different attributes based on regional differences. However now these faiths have spread far and wide. In Philadelphia where I live there is a Voudou group, but they generally avoid outsiders and it seems very much to be black thing for many of them. Santeria is more open and easier for outsiders to embrace. Much of the Latino music scene here is involved with it and I have attended ceremonies for different Orisha because I know Latino Musicians, players of Conga, Bongo etc. I also know a few white Americans who study Latino music and have gotten to be very involved in Santeria through that. Voudou sems to have a more secretive air with few outsiders taking part.

Lars Well I know that you can get it in different flavours and perhaps there is a slight feeling of being high by breathing the purer oxygen as compared to the wonderful city air.
