Guest guest
Namsate All: I am Dipti pursuing my higher studies in US, from Mumbai, India. Joined this group to understand Hindu related activities. I am deeply religious and has a strong Hindu/India centric bent of mind. I hate pseudo-secularism and strongly believe a strong and resurgent Hindu community is essential for a developed and prosperous India. Though other religions form integral part of India but over the years they have had weakening effect of Indian socio-economic fabric in the form of IIslamic Terrorism and illegal conversion and missionary education in form of convent system. Such forums help understand the Hindu issues in true perspective which we hardly get to know from our "SECULAR" media which leaves no stone unturned in Hindu-bashing or minoriity appeasement. This is the case with even the mainline print and electronic media such as Indian Express, Times of India, The Hindu, Star TV, NDTV et al who are fooling the NRIs with their communist mindset.... Guest guest
Hello all, Perhaps if I introduce myself, someone might respond to my earlier post? I am deeply involved in practice, have been a Sri Vidya upasaka for a number of years and attend a local Hindu Temple. I am looking for information on Astha Dasa Bhuja Mahalakshmi Durga. She is the 18 armed form of Lakshmi, sometimes called "Chandi".There are a couple of temples devoted to her in South India, one near Chennai and one in Salem. I am trying to find: sotras, texts, pujas, any information at all. i am new to this group. Am I doing this right? Anyone? sadhvi/nityashakti
Guest guest
Hi Sadhvi: Thanks for the intro. Welcome to the group, and I hope you find something of value here. You write: *** I am looking for information on Astha Dasa Bhuja Mahalakshmi Durga. She is the 18-armed form of Lakshmi, sometimes called "Chandi" ... You add: *** I am deeply involved in practice, have been a Sri Vidya upasaka for a number of years *** If you are a Srividya upasaka, then the first thing you should do is ask your guru for specific instructions on whether and how you might approach Mahalakshmi in your sadhana. As for general information, a few tthings occur off the top of my head. The central text of Shaktism, of course, is Devi Mahatmyam, which is even called the "Chandi" in many places. Mahalakshmi's 18- armed form is the dhyana preceding the second carita, and She governs that section, and to a certain extent (due to its rajasic character) the entire scripture. Mahalakshmi also governs the second enclosure of the first avarana of Sri Chakra in the Khadgamala, which you can find by clicking on the current Khadgamala Devi on the Group's front page. Among hymns, the Mahalakshmi Stotram is popular and recordings of the same are widely available. If you already know all of this, then perhaps a more specific inquiry would be useful? aim mAtangyai namaH

I am not with this guru any longer so could not approach him for this information. I am particularly interested in knowing any temples that might have a murti of this form of Lakshmi (I have seen the omkarashram website) and finding out what parayanams, pujas, etc. they do....It's really of great personal importance ..which is why I'm asking. thanks again for any help you might offer. The website is fascinating. I keep finding new things as I explore. best regards, sadhvi

Guest guest
I have seen such a diety according to DM Dhyana of Madhyama charita in the dharmavaram adheenam in Tamil nadu. It was long ago. Maybe someone from Tamil Nad can give the directions. an uncle of mine was familiar with her. He was in charge of the renovation of the famous visnu temple of Sri Ranganatha at Trichy after the spontaneous combustion of the dol and some special wood(I forget the name - I thinl it was ippli or uppili or something) was necessary for the cieling of the sanctum sanctorum that just was not available as the wood had to be seasoned for 3 years before use. This uncle was strict and he said if the same wood as was used is not available he would rather wait. But the renovation deadline was 6 months!! So as usual, he just went to the temporary sanctum and said "Hey!! find me the wood or I am going to stop the work!!" he came to his ofice and suddenly an Aiyangar came and said why are u sitting here the wood is in Dharmavaram adhinam go get it. But added a woman will show u the place, take the wood first and then seek permission and disappeared. It happened as predicted. He used to say that a woman of extraordinary beauty led the party to wood properly seasoned and dressed just right for the sanctum of Ranganathananda. No carpentary was needed at all. He believes it was that ashtau bhujaangeem.... BTW does not ashtau bhujaangeem in DM not mean 16 hands? ashtau = 2X8?? nityashakti <sadhvi wrote: >>>"As for general information, a few tthings occur off the top of my head. Guest guest
I think the two temples you are referring to are the "Om Sri skandashramam" temples ate tambaram channai and salem in tamil nadu whichz also famous for the 12-13 foor tall prathyangira idol installed there.! the small picture at the top of there page is that of "Astadasabhuja Mahalakshmi Durga" http://education.vsnl.com/skandashramam/main.html , nityashakti <sadhvi@c...> wrote:Hello all, > Perhaps if I introduce myself, someone might respond to my earlier post? I have also seen the personal photograph belonging to a Shiva priest of another 18 armed Lakshmi (South Indian). This is not a form that I have seen, ever, in the USA..and very little information about her is available. There is alot of information about the more "traditional" form of Lakshmi but very little (with the exceptionof Chandi Path and one other puja I am aware of...plus the Sri Chakra avarna mentioned). I am still searching away...anyone who can help, I thank you in advance. regards, sadhvi
