ambikA : The Mother.

The mother of the universe. Or AmbikA means BhArati, the goddess of

speech, and earth; or, ambikA, the aggregate of saktis or icchA and

kriyA which are the forms of RudrAni. Or Ambika means either night

or sleep. The Visva says, "Ambika, means deceit, perfections, sleep

and night."

In the Skanda in the NavarAtrapradipa it is said, "Night is the

great Devi, and the day is Siva. "the Harivamsa also says, "Maya the

great deceiver, known in the world as sleep. Her body is night which

creates darkness and destroys the day, the consumer of half the life

of beings in the world, being terrible. There is none equal to her…

Except Visnu, none among the Devas can control her." The Mark. Pr

also says, "I praise the divine sleep of Visnu, of unequalled power,

the ruler of the universe, the supporter of the world, and the cause

of preservation and destruction. "

Dr. C. Suryanarayana Murthy, in his 1962 commentary, adds:

"AmbikA [is] the aggregate of the three powers of will, action and

knowledge, which [constitutes] the name of SrI-Tripura-SundarI, the

Mother. AmbikA, being a diminutive and a an endearing term of Amba,

means SrI-BAlA-Tripura-SundarI."
