vArunimadavihvalA : Perturbed by the intoxicating liquor.

VArunimat, belonging to the regions of Varuna, ie Adisesa, the

thousand-hooded snake, because he dwells in that region; avihvalA

not perturbed or fatigued, ie by Her grace Adisesa is not fatigued,

in suporting the universe. The Visnu Pr. says, "In the Varuna

regions he [Adisesa] worships [Devi] with his own glorious body."

Varuni : the juice extracted from dates, called VAruni, because the

god Varuna is fond of it. The expression means forgetting external

objects and simply enjoying [lit. chewing] svAtmAnanda.

Or VArunimat, those who conquered the VaruninAdi, and became firm [

avihvala]. The Yoga-Sastra says, "VAruninAdi is that which is above

and below, going everywhere, PUsan is the deity of the quarters, and

VAyu is the deity of this VAruni [nAdi]."

"VAruni-Mada-VivhalA [means] 'drunk with the wine of dates.' VArunI

is a nAdi by knowledge of which the devotee reaches the Thousand-

Petalled Lotus. After that s/he becomes completely lost to all

external experience."

- Commentary, Dr. C. Suryanarayana Murthy, 1962
