Guest guest
Greetings everyone, I humbly apologise for not being as active as I was when I started - real life and other things caught to me and all. However, know that I think about you guys still and hope things go well with the group. You guys really helped me with building on my spirituality. I, though, must ask another favour, since I am still learning: what book on Hindu festivals would you recommend. There are various books out there, but which books would you recommend? Is there anything else you would recommend concerning the festivals? I am still trying to learn about the various bits of the tradition concerning the Sanatana Dharma and the culture(s) surrounding it, especially Shaktism. Thank you for your time. You been very helpful so far. Blessings, Anya/Christina

Please do not apologize. Almost all of us here are working people. We have our family and social obligation. So it's okay. I am happy that you still have the time to visit us and still with us. Hope to see you more often in the message board. With regards to festival. I am not the best person to ask about festival because for me everyday is a day to be celebrating especially for DEVI. Any day and anytime is an auspicious time. Nevertheless I just like to share some information. In few days time beginning from 17th July [according to our calendar here in Singapore & Malaysia] it is the beginning of the month Aadi. >From my understanding, Aadi is a very auspicious month for DEVI devotee especially in the Tamil Nadu region. A good time I am told to do your sadhana, but not a good time to have weddings or to start anything new. Not good time too for women to conceive. A priest from Nageshwari Temple here in Malaysia told me that during the month of Aadi it is believe that DEVI will pay visits too all her devotees, and sometimes SHE will choose a house/temple where she will remain throughout the whole month of Aadi. So to celebrate her presence, continuous prayers, bhajans and food etc are offered to entertain her. One of those many festivals, I like to mention here is the Kuul Vaarppu Celebration. My Tamil is not that good, but from what I gather it is translated as "porridge festival". Maybe our tamil speaking members will be able to shed more light to this tradition. I have the honor to know a couple who have been a good friend of mine for many years, and they are trying to bring back these ancient traditions [popular in India, Tamil Nadu] into Singapore. This festival usually carried out in the month of Aadi and particularly for Goddess Mariamman. The couple will go from house to house to beg for rice, thereafter cook this rice into porridge, offered it to Goddess Mariamman and then distribute the porridge to all. I'm just simplifying this ritual but the whole preparation itself will take weeks. Just to give you an idea about the celebration, you can go to the link below: http://nmadasamy.com/Mariamman/7thkuulvaarppu.html
