pasupAsavimocini : Releasing the ignorant from bondage.

Pasu [lit. cattle] are those who are devoid of the conviction of non-

separation [abhedajNAna]. The Br. Up [i.4.10] says, "Now, he who

worships another deity, thinking the deity is one and himself

another individual, he does not know. He is lke a pasu." Here the

word yo'nyAm [yah, one and anyAm, another deity] means the

triangular [sri] Cakra. Because the Sruti [Tai] says, "In the golden

three-petalled bud three [syllabled mantra, ie of Devi] is

established."

Hence the pasus are those who are devoid of wisdom.

Pasa [bondage]: pA, thirst, asa, hunder. This [hunger and thirst]

belongs only to the ignorant, and she vi, completely, mocini,

releases. The ignorant people are called pAsus because they possess

the desire of eating and drinking only. The Sruti says, "Noe the

other pasus understand only hunger and thirst; they do not speak of

the known [brahman]; they do not see the known, they do not known

the future, nor this nor the other world."

Or Pasu [avyaya, indeclinable] means completely, as in the

Sruti, "samyagarthe, etc." the word pasu is thus explained, pAsa the

noose of Varuna, from which she frees her devotees.

Pasa, dice, vi, much, mocini, throwing the dice on the board, she

conquered him.

Pasupa, the protector [pa] of pasus, is the supreme Siva. AsA, those

who desire to obtain Siva, such ones she emaciaptes [mocini],

entirely [vi].

Pasus, all things from BrahmA, to a tree, because they have the

quality of pasus [ie the desire of eating and drinking]; pAsa,

avidyA because it is the mean of bondage. The Saurasam, explaining

the word, avidyA says, "It is the cause of all bondage".

Or, pAsas the modifications [seven[ or the categories [sixteen] of

it [avidya]; vimocini she releases them by [means of] devotion to

Siva. The Linga Pr. :"From BrahmA to trees they all have the nature

of beasts [pasus]." The twenty –four categories, [including]

illusion [mAyA] action [Karman] and the qualities [gunas], and the

objects also are called pasus because they bind the jivas. Boung by

these all embodied souls are emancipated by devotion to Siva alone.

There are fivefold afflictions, namely nescience, egoism, desire,

anger, ardent attachment [to life]. Nescience is the absence of

discrimination between the Self and the ono-self. Egoism is the

assumption of that Body, etc, which are not-self are Self. Desire is

the craving after flowers, scents, etc which are the means of bodily

enjoyment. Anger is aversion to whatever obstructs the attainment of

them. Ardent attachment is not renouncing a thing even though one

know it is no beneficial. The same is explained in the Yoga-sutra, -

III.3-9]. But the De. BhAg Pr. Says, "[1] Non-Discrimination is

darkness [tamas]; [2] bewilderment of mind is confusion [moha]; [3]

desire of worldy pleasures is great confusion [mahAmoha]; [4] death

is deep indignation [ andhatAmisra]; and [5] anger is called

indignation [tAmisra]. Thus nescience which sprang from the great

Atma [brahman] is fivefold." But here words tamas, etc are only

different names for the five afflictions mentioned above. Death here

corresponds to ardent attachment [of Yoga-sutra division]. This is

explained in the Linga Pr."O best of men, the wise say that

nescience, egoism ,desire, hatred and ardent attachment, these five

are the pasus. The learned say, the affliction are five, namely

darkness, confusion, great confusion, deep indignation and

indignation. Nescience, they say is darkness; egoism is confusion;

desire is great confusion, attachment [to life] is deep indignation

and hatred is indignation". The divisions of these five afflictions

are given in the same work :" There are eight kinds of darkness,

eight of confusion, ten of great confusion, eighteen of deep

indignation and eight of indignation." These are in all fifty-two.

Some say that indignation has ten more, making sixty-two in all.

These [sixty two] afflictions differ, according to the three kinds

of men [pasus], namely the world men, the ascetics[Yogins] and the

knowers of truth [tattvajNa]. The De. BhAg. Pr says, "In the knowers

of truth these afflictions sleep, in the Yogins they are burned up,

in those attached to worldly objects they arise unimpeded."

"Pasu-PAsa-VimochinI [means] 'She releases the bonds of the bound.'

The bonds referred to are:

(1) ignorance;

(2) bewilderment or Moha;

(3) strong desire for worldly things;

(4) anger; and

(5) illusion.

Every attribute that limits the Consciousness (such as desire,

anger, etc.) is a pAsa or bond. From Brahma downward to the most

inert, Consciousness is bound down by these limitations, and hence

all these are called PAsUs -- and Siva is called Pasupati, their

Lord. Faith in Him will release them from their bonds. (Siva-

Bhaktaiva Sarva-PAsa-HAniH: 'Devotion to Siva alone will destroy all

bonds.' - Br. Up.)

But although Siva releases these bonds, it is His Power, LalitA, who

actually produces this Liberation. Because it is only She who

creates bonds or destroys them."

Busted! Bhasurananda has kindly pointed out that I mistakenly used a

long A in the word Pashu. I'd point out that the error is definitely

mine in the transcription; the good Dr. Suryanarayanamurthy got it

right, of course. ;-)

The sentence should be clarified to read, "Every attribute that

limits the Consciousness (such as desire, anger, etc.) is a pAsa or

bond. From Brahma downward to the most inert, Consciousness is bound

down by these limitations [the pAshas], and hence all these [people

bound by the pAshas] are called Pashus -- and Siva is called

Pasupati, their Lord."

Sorry for the inaccuracy!
