mahAkAmesanayanakumudAhlAdakaumudi : The moonlight which gladdens

the Kumuda flowers of the eyes of MahAkAmesa.

Kaumudi [moonlight] may mean the full moon of the month,

Karttika. The Yadava says, "Kumuda [neu] means water lily, red lotus,

and [in masc.] ape. Kaumuda means the month Karttika and Kaumudi,

the moon of that month."

Or, ku, inferior, mud, pleasure, kaumuda are those who long for

worldly pleasures. They are called inferior beacus [their pleasures]

are mixed with pain and for other reasons. So Kaumuda means a

misearable one. The Sasvata and Visva say, "kaumut means inferior

men and water-lily." A, full, hlAda, joy, ie. Salvation. A man

attains that stage by being led [nayana] to MahAkAmesa. Kaumudi,

light. The Meaning is that she becomes, out of pity, light, as it

were, to them who are blind in world pursuits.

"MahA-kAmesanayana-kamudAhlAda-kaumudi" means 'like the moonlight to

the water lily.' She is thoroughly pleasing to the eye of mahA-

kAmesa, i.e. Siva. He thoroughly enjoys Her vision. Her creation is

His LIla, or pleasure.

"MahA-kAmesa also means Brahma-JNAni. She grants him the unbroken

bliss of kaivalya."
