kAlakanthi : Wife of KAlakantha

 

KAlakantha : Siva is called so because his throat is coloured by

poison. VayU pr. says, "In the presence of a multitude of Devas,

PisAcas, serpents, and rAksasas, the virulant poison became

transfixed in the throad; hence I am called KAlakantha."

 

According to the Devi Pr. among the sixty-eight sacred places,

KalaNjara is a place where Kalakantha is woreshipped.

 

Or Kala a soft low sound, kantha, throat, ie a soft low sound

proceeds from her throat.

 

or there is a story in the Linga Pr that in order to destroy the

daitya DAruka, "Siva created Kali as well as Kapardini and

KAlakanthi"
