Guest guest
For those interested in or curious about the Nepali tradition-- I ran across this nicely detailed essay yesterday. It includes some interesting quotes from former (Nepali) Kumaris. http://www.albertson.edu/Trace/stories/living_goddess_of_nepal.htm , sankara menon <kochu1tz> wrote: > That's only in the Nepali tradition. > > Len Rosenberg <kalipadma108> wrote: > > [....] > > I've read that in Nepal, the girls who portray the > > Kumari are seen as unlucky for men, and frequently > > they cannot get married. Guest guest
Thanks, Ms. Bauju! The Nepali Kumari tradition sets off a whole lot of alarms for me. The lack of education offered to these girls is appalling. I am a devotee of Saraswati; one would hope that the Kumaris were given an exposure to great literature, music and theater while they reigned -- apparently not. I had an aquaintance who sold beautiful custom made bronze murthies that he commissioned from Newari artisans. I was surprised to learn that the Newaris refused to make murthies of Kali Ma; my friend said they were afraid of Kali, and would not keep her image anywhere. Neglecting Saraswati, and fearful of Kali? I need to have a word with these Newari Hindus! :-) (The Kumaris are dressed in, and painted with red colors -- sacred to Lakshmi and Durga. If the Newaris more honored Saraswati and Kali, I suppose that the girls would also be allowed to wear white and black.) -- Len/ Kalipadma --- msbauju <msbauju wrote: > For those interested in or curious about the Nepali > tradition-- > I ran across this nicely detailed essay yesterday. > It includes some interesting quotes from former > (Nepali) Kumaris. > > http://www.albertson.edu/Trace/stories/living_goddess_of_nepal.htm > > Mail - PC Magazine Editors' Choice 2005
Guest guest
Lenji, ALOT of people are afraid of Kali Ma. Many Indian Gurus including one close to me, tells Westerners not to keep pictures of Kali Ma around the house in prominent areas (maybe only in the puja room) only because of the offenses that they may commit unknowingly. Hence, there could be a bad effect. Another example about this type of attitude is the fact that the vast majority of Hindus won't dare mess with Salagram Silas. Most Vaishnavas well know that many people should not keep SALAGRAM SILAS around the house, as they may unkowingly commit offenses. That is not to say that people should not have them though. The Salagram is an alive deity, and if not cared for can wreak havoc. Can't eat eggs, fish, chicken, smoke, or drink liquor with Salagrams; nor commit sexual impropriety, or covet wealth. That's a tall order for the majority of us sinners! But I think the fear or apprehension with kali Ma comes from her being UGRA. I also think, in my opinion humble opinion, that this applies to any Ugra murti such as maybe Bhairava & Narasimhadeva. You should always proceed with caution whether they are given pran pratistha or not. There is an old story about this one 1920s male saint that had a connection with Ramakrishna Paramahamsa (well after Ramakrishna's death) and the Dakshineswar Kali Image (or maybe another Kali shrine; pardon my memory!). That particular Kali Ma image never allowed her image to be made photographically or otherwise. Then if I remember correctly, somehow through the saints intercession, Kali Ma allowed it. Photos were made and distributed to many. One couple with a 12 - 13y/o daughter begged for a picture. To make a long story short, the daughter a few weeks later took gravely ill. It was because they did not care for even the photo, as it was found weeks later, riddled with insect holes under a pile of clothes. The daughter immediately recovered after it was found and cared for or disposed of properly. Kali Ma later came in a dream to someone expressing her disdain at being not cared for, and that being the cause of the illness; especially after being begged for via the photo image. Guest guest
It was indeed very depressing to see those pictures. why in the name of religion such cruelty is done? Nobody is stopping them from eating meat but why as an offering to goddess and eating as prasad? I am aware of animal sacrifices and sometimes even human sacrifice . But, it was a different experience when real pictures were flashed before your eyes. raji >"mahahradanatha" <mahahradanatha > > > Re: Kumari >Sun, 02 Oct 2005 10:19:50 -0000 > >The Newari do of course worship Kali.
