Guest guest
Varanasi, INDIA (October 12, 2005): In Varanasi this year, puja pandals have sprung up with idols of Lord Hanuman and goddess Durga slaying a Chinese dragon on the occasion of Navami and Durga Puja. It's a reflection of the worry that the traders in Varanasi are facing regarding Chinese goods flooding their markets. They are hoping that maybe by some stroke of luck their businesses won't suffer due to the influx of cheap Chinese goods. "Dragon is a Chinese mythological creature. Since there is a flood of Chinese products in the market the theme can be interpreted as Lord Hanuman is here to take care of the Chinese invasion," says Ajay Rai, a visitor. CONTEXT OF WAR Ironically, the dragon is a sign of power and mystery in China which is used as a sign of luck by many. The mythical beast has long been celebrated for its benevolence, intelligence and good will. In the puja pandals however, the dragon is being seen as a representation of China and Lord Hanuman and Goddess Durga are being represented as India. The victory of the Hindu Gods is thus the subtext of India winning over China. "It is our custom to win all wars. The fight that you see here is a symbolisation of India's victory over China. Chinese products have flooded the Indian market. The theme has been chosen to appeal to the citizen of India to buy domestic products and avoid the Chinese products," says Priti Pandey, a visitor. TRIUMPH OF GOOD Durga Puja marks the start of the Hindu festivals in India. Goddess Durga is famed in Hindu mythology for riding a lion and slaying the demon king Mahisasura who had conquered the heavens. The puja is considered more than just a religious festival. It is a celebration of life, culture, popular customs and traditions. It is also a time for reunion and rejuvenation, and marks the triumph of good over evil. Guest guest
I can just visualise it now. By next year, you will see Durga sitting on/standing beside a Dragon. Good bye lion and tigers ! , "Devi Bhakta" <devi_bhakta> wrote: > > Varanasi, INDIA (October 12, 2005): In Varanasi this year, puja > pandals have sprung up with idols of Lord Hanuman and goddess Durga > slaying a Chinese dragon on the occasion of Navami and Durga Puja. > > It's a reflection of the worry that the traders in Varanasi are > facing regarding Chinese goods flooding their markets. > > They are hoping that maybe by some stroke of luck their businesses > won't suffer due to the influx of cheap Chinese goods. >

Guest guest
I always have this problem with British Joke. Though I come from British Orientated Educated System, I never understand their joke or if I do, it takes a long while before I catch the meaning. Unlike some jokes especially American Joke, its just spontaneously. Now! how does being scary leads one to start having kittens? All I know if you are really scared, you pee! in your pants. , "her_asha" <her_asha> wrote: Too right it will be scary! Especially to President Bush...he'll start having kittens!! Guest guest
Nora, I've just heard the expression, "having kittens," used to denote leaving someone very upset and discomforted. As in, "If your wife sees that photo of you in skin-tight bicycle pants, she'll start having kittens." Not particularly British, either. -- Len --- NMadasamy <nmadasamy wrote: > > I always have this problem with British Joke. Kittens are such adorable and cute animal. How can they cause upset and makes people discomfort. As in, "If your wife sees that photo of you in skin-tight bicycle pants, she'll start having kittens." Well I did suggest to my hubby after all that fuss over the skin tigh bicycle pants. I know I would not start having kittens.
