mAtrkAvarnarUpinI : In the form of mAtrkA letters.

Or matrkA letters from A to Ksa, varna, colours, white, etc., rupini,

Devi is in the form of these. The SanatkumAra Sam says, "Vowels

beginning: with A [16] are smokecoloured; Ka an dothers [to Da, 13]

are red; Da to Pha [9] are yellowish; the five letters a etc are

crimson; Sa, etc. [5] are the colour of gold; Ha and the last [ksa]

are of the colour of lighting." Some Tantras differ in this : "The

vowels [16], are the colour of crystal; Ka to Ma [ 25] are the

colour of coral; Ya and others [to Ha, 9] are yellowish; and Ksa is

crimson" some say, all the letters are white. The MAtrkAviveka

says, "A is all divinity, red, controlling all things…" Thus to each

letter a different colour is given.

Or the fifty-one letters [A to Ksa] are her form, [1. see footnote]

varna the letters, rUpa, indicate [her]. The SU. Sam [iV. 4. 21 and

22] says, "Just as the supreme Siva is twofold as Sakti and Siva, so

this MAtrikA Devi herself shines in two. The vowels indicate one

form of sakti, the other [consonants] indicate Siva. Thus the [Devi]

of Vidya under the form of letters indicates Siva" The commentator

on this explains : A etc., means Sri-Kantha and other forms of Siva

and as well as PUrnodari and other saktis.

Or wearing the garland of letters [aksamAlA, A to Ksa]. The

JNAnArnava says, "A is the first, O Devi, and Ksa is the last, thus

she is called AksamAla [garland consisting of letters A to Ksa] She

is the Brahman-Word itself, but in reality she transcends the word"

Or mAtrkAvarna, letters, rUpa, [she] creates. Refer to the Saubhagya-

sudhodaya wherein is described in order, the origin of the letters

through the icchAsakti belonging to Siva in his anuttara aspect.

Or mAtrkAvarna, letters, which belongs to the Sricakra; this is

described in the sixth chapter of the MAtrkAviveka : hence the

Sanandana Sam says :Meditation on the letters and on the Sricakra

as one is called kailAsa-prastAra.

According to some, this name is divided into two as mAtrkA [Mother],

and varnarUpini [in the form of letters][2 see footnote]

Footnote ;

1] There are three prastAras, namely Meru, KailAsa and BhU

prastAras. The 1st is to identify with the sixteen nityA deities,

the 2nd with the mAtrkA [51 letters] and the 3rd is with the eight

vasinis.

2] In the VarivasyArahasya the word mAtrkA is explained thus : mA

means limits or measures, tr, crosses, Ka, shines, ie one who knows

mAtrkA letters, knows Brahman [ma] crosses samsAra and shines.

She is the Spoken Word -- NAma formed out of the letters, beginning

from the VedAs. Ome divide this name into mAtrikA and VarnarUpinI,

and take these as two names.
