Guest guest
Hi Arjuna: Your point is well taken. I don't always agree with the interpretations given by the good doctor -- they occasionally conflict significantly with what I've been taught. But overall, his explanations are clear and interesting and brief, and make a good on-board posting series and a useful supplement to the authoritative Bhaskararaya comments being posted by Nora. Please note that the doctor's explanations are often not straight translations, but rather supplementary glosses based on teachings he received from his guru, Sri Sankaracharya Swami Mutt of Kancheepuram. Back some 40-odd years ago, when it was published (the year of my birth, just to date myself *lol*), Dr. S's commentary would not have enjoyed the wide, casual readership it receives today on the Web. It would have been a small press run distributed mainly to Lalita devotees who were already aware of the LS and its overt Sanskrit meanings. Thus the doctor could afford to supplement and annotate without necessarily repeating the base meanings for his presumably knowledgeable readers. By way of context, I'd add this: Im my on-board posts of Suryanarayanamurthy's work, I have (rightly or wrongly) pretty much ignored one of the principle purposes of Suryanarayanamurthy's commentary. That is, as a medical doctor and man of science -- Dr. S was President of the Andhra Branch of the Indian Medical Association, and editor of the Journal of the Andhra Medical Association for years -- his primary fascination was to set the emerging findings of quantum physics, relativity, etc., alongside the ancient Hindu scriptures, and esentially marvel at the similarity. In his mind -- and I think the scientific and technological advances of the past 40 years has only re- and re-inforced his views -- each new discovery of Western science only served to further validate the Eastern path of Srividya. Guest guest
Hi DB: That's interesting (the medical doctor's viewpoint on science and scripture), and similar to Dr. Deepak Chopra's work. It seems to demonstrate unity between East and West, which I gather is the reason why the doctors are sharing that information. , "Devi Bhakta" <devi_bhakta> wrote: as a medical doctor and man of science -- Dr. S > was President of the Andhra Branch of the Indian Medical Association, > and editor of the Journal of the Andhra Medical Association for years -- > his primary fascination was to set the emerging findings of quantum > physics, relativity, etc., alongside the ancient Hindu scriptures, and > esentially marvel at the similarity. > > In his mind -- and I think the scientific and technological advances of > the past 40 years has only re- and re-inforced his views -- each new > discovery of Western science only served to further validate the > Eastern path of Srividya. > > DB
Guest guest
I'd argue that, in Dr. S's case at least, the message is less about "East-West Unity" and more about the stunning convergence of Religion and Science at the most rarified levels of inquiry and exploration. Just my 2 cents tho ... , "Mary Ann" <buttercookie61> wrote: > > Hi DB: > > That's interesting (the medical doctor's viewpoint on science and > scripture), and similar to Dr. Deepak Chopra's work. Guest guest
Your message said "In his mind ... each new discovery of Western science only served to further validate the Eastern path of Srividya." Essentially, they are one and the same, the convergence of Religion and Spirituality, and East/West. Why argue? , "Devi Bhakta" <devi_bhakta> wrote: > > I'd argue that, in Dr. S's case at least, the message is less > about "East-West Unity" and more about the stunning convergence of > Religion and Science at the most rarified levels of inquiry and > exploration. > > Just my 2 cents tho ... > > > > , "Mary Ann" > <buttercookie61> wrote: > > > > Hi DB: > > > > That's interesting (the medical doctor's viewpoint on science and > > scripture), and similar to Dr. Deepak Chopra's work.
