thirucciRRambalam

Meaning:

He is like the affection personified;

With the foot wear covered with ripped strap and

dipped sole;

With the leather belt tied around the nice waist

containing steel dagger that does not go dry of blood;

With the long leather bag stuffed with short hair

and strapped around;

In the upper body with the garland alternating

with sharp nail of tiger and white horn of pig;

With the blue feather (of peacock) inserted over

forehead

in the cowry (shell band) tied around the forest of

hair;

With stinking body with bend;

The chief of the clan that is like the shankara in a

way

that they win the tigers and adorned with flower of

victory.

Holding the good bow and arrows,

moving over the hills and forest like the wind,

shooting down with arrows the pig,

cutting it, putting on a rod, roasting in fire,

(thus made) daily food kept in the tongue,

the cool flower of offering tucked in own head,

anointing water in the pot of mouth,

removing the offerings already on the

Eye-fore-headed Lord in the huge forest,

To show to the shivakOcariyAr of undeparting

character,

his love, that day the blood dripping from the right

eye

of the Three-eyed Father, that moment

crying, falling, praying, raising up to lament,

determining that it would not be cleared by mean

medicines,

considering himself as the medicine, pasting

(his) floral eye - cleared.

The other beautiful eye (of Lord now) dripping like

flood,

saying, "It can be cleared too", plucking out (his)

other eye also with the arrow-head, the Governing Lord

with a hand clutching both (of his) hands, hastily to

whom said,

"See, Our wound is cured! Noble! Noble!",

saluting with folded hands the holy feet of that holy

hunter,

will make the task of seeking birth ruined!

Notes:

1. c.f. kaNNappan oppathOr anbu inmai - thiruvAcakam

He did not just have love, but kaNNappar became the

love himself.

2. What is so great that contemplating on the

illiterate hunter who did not even know how to

properly worship God, will

liberate one from the birth cycle? While all others

seek

the refuge in God there is still care for self.

This hunter who came with high thirst to drink water

in the

river forgot even that bodily need of thirst along

with food and

sleep for seven days and cared only about the "safety"

and "well-being" of kALaththiyappar. With all his

focus on

kALaththiyappar he lived in kALaththiyappar himself.

As the shivAgamas prescribe he was no longer

"baudika prANi" but he became "linga prANi".

He wept and agitated in pain to see blood in the

eye of God. He was dancing with joy - though he

had just plucked out his sensitive organ of eye -

to see the Lord cured(!) - Completely tuned to the

God and completely lost the self - the state the

philosophy describes as the maturity to ever rejoice

in the ever Bliss giving Supreme - the liberation!!

3. pOz - ripped; vAr - strap; curikai - dagger;

eqku - steel; vIkkuthal - to tie; uzuvai - tiger;

ugir - nail; kEzal - pig; maruppu - horn;

kunyci - hair; kavaDi - band made of shells;

pulluthal - to embrace; muDugu - filthy;

kuDilai - bent; yAkkai - body; ERRukkal - steep rock;

karumA - pig; pOnakam - food; paLiththAmam -

offering flower; thakkiNam - right; pun - mean;

kaluzi - flood; pakazi - arrow; ollai - fast;

vETTal - seeking.
