Justice Girish Gupta asked the court authorities to serve notice on the five-member committee, headed by Alipore distict sessions court judge Prabudha Sankar Banerjee. Justice Gupta issued the direction on a contempt plea filed by Kalighat temple priest Asoke Kumar Haldar alleging that priests continued to sell their "pala" (monthly term for leading the worship of the goddess) to others defying the Supreme Court order. Mr Haldar also complained that the apex court-fixed schedules for worshipping the goddess and offering "bhogs" were not being maintained. The plea would come up for further hearing after two weeks. The Supreme court in an order on 28 July, 2005, set guidelines for running the temple, including worshipping and offering bhogs, after hearing a writ petition highlighting mismanagement in the temple. The Supreme Court also appointed a five-member committee under the chairmanship of Alipore district sessions court judge Mr Banerjee. Millions of people visit the centuries-old Kalighat temple, considered to be one of the 51 piths of the Hindus, in the southern part of the city to offer worship to the goddess Kali. Authorities have of late unveiled plans to renovate and beautify the temple complex to put it in the tourist map of the country. --------------------- A related article from July, 2005: http://www.telegraphindia.com/1050729/asp/calcutta/story_5046358.asp
