paramA : The Supreme

 

`Para, Brahman, ma, limits. Or, para Siva, mA Laksmi.

 

Or there are four forms of Parabrahman, ma, transcending [these

four]. The Visnu Pr says, " O twice born one, the first form of

supreme Brahman is Purusa, the second is the unmanifested; the third

is manifested and the next is time. Thus that which is higher than

pradhAna [unmanifested], Purusa, manifested, and time is seen by the

wise to be the pure supreme abode of Visnu. The forms called

pradhAna, etc. are the cause of the manifestation of the universe.

ParamA means "Ultimate," here referring to ParamAtmA, the Cosmic

Soul. Brahma is said to have four aspects:

 

(1) PradhAna, unmanifested;

 

(2) Purusa;

 

(3) Vyakta, manifested; and

 

(4) KAla, i.e. Time.

 

ParamA here means that She is beyond these four aspects of Brahma.
