Sankranti is the time when the Sun moves from one rasi (zodiac) to

another.

Sankranti is the time when the Sun moves from one rasi (zodiac) to

another. There are 12 Sankrantis in all and two are important. One

occurs in the month of July and is called Karka Sankranti. The other

occurs in January and is called Makara Sankranti.

While Karka Sankranti is indicative of the beginning of

Dakshinayana, in which the Sun traverses from North to South, Makara

Sankranti is indicative of the start of Uttarayana, in which the Sun

moves from South to North. During Uttarayana, the Sun sucks water

from the ground, while during Dakshinayana, it delivers water to the

Earth in the form of rains. Uttarayana is said to be the day for

Gods while Dakshinayana is said to be the night for Gods.

The presiding deity for Makara Rasi is Shani and since Makara

Sankranti is occurring on a Saturday this year, it is more

auspicious and rare. The other rare aspect is that this time,

Sankranti also falls on a full moon day. Sesame or ellu (Til) is

considered auspicious for this day. It is said that `Tilasnaye

Tilodvarthi, Tilahomi, Tilodaki, Tilabhuk, Tiladata cha shat tilah

papanashanaha' or bathing with sesame, applying sesame on the body,

offering sesame to fire, offering water mixed with sesame, eating

sesame and offering sesame are all considered to be auspicious on

this day. Sesame mixed with jaggery which is distributed on this day

is an indication of the good and bad and the fact that both are

inevitable in life.
