[....] This particular paragraph sounds to me like it's alluding to Sri Aurobindo's description of Mahasaraswati in his _Mother Book_, available online at the link below (you may have to paste the link back together.) Note the references to "the youngest of the four". http://www.searchforlight.org/The_Mother_BY_Sri%20Aurobindo/The% 20Mother6.htm [begin quotes] Four great Aspects of the Mother, four of her leading Powers and Personalities have stood in front in her guidance of this Universe and in her dealings with the terrestrial play. One is her personality of calm wideness and comprehending wisdom and tranquil benignity, inexhaustible compassion and sovereign and surpassing majesty and all ruling greatness. [Mahasaraswati] Another embodies her power of splendid strength and irresistible passion, her warrior mood, her overwhelming will, her impetuous swiftness and world-shaking force. [Mahakali] A third is vivid and sweet and wonderful with her deep secret of beauty and harmony and fine rhythm, her intricate and subtle opulence, her compelling attraction and her captivating grace. [Mahalakshmi] The fourth is equipped with her close and profound capacity of intimate knowledge and careful flawless work and quiet and exact perfection in all things. [Maheshwari] Wisdom, Strength, Harmony, Perfection are the several attributes and it is these powers that they bring with them to the world, [....] To the four we give the four great names, Maheshwari, Mahakali, Mahalakshmi, Mahasaraswati. [....] Mahasaraswati is the Mother's Power of Work and her spirit of perfection and order. The youngest of the Four, she is the most skillful in executive faculty and the nearest to physical Nature. Maheswari lays down the large lines of the world-forces, Mahakali drives their energy and impetus, Mahalakshmi discovers their rhythms and measures, but Mahasaraswati presides over their detail of organization and execution, relation of parts and effective combination of forces and unfailing exactitude of result and fulfilment. [....] [end quotes] Is this particular four-Personality presentation/description unique to Sri Aurobindo and his followers? If so, it seems to me that the Indian Express article author has equated (Aurobindo's) Mahasaraswati with Saraswati. I'd gotten the impression from Devadatta Kali's _Devimahatmya_ that Saraswati and Mahasaraswati differ, and I'd assumed Sri Aurobindo was making a similar distinction with the use of the name Mahasaraswati--but perhaps that's not so??? Any Aurobindo scholars in the crowd? :-)
Guest guest
Namaste. Though not a student of Sri Aurobindo's work, I have read his Mother essays online, and find them quite inspiring. Though I would agree that Saraswati and Mahasaraswati are technically different Goddesses, they seem intrinsically related. One is more tangible and mythological, and the other Cosmic, but in the end they are the same Goddess. Hopefully, by Her Grace we will realize our identity as part of Her, and Her identity within ourselves. -Santo "Aum Shanti Shanti Shantih." Guest guest
Namaste, Though not a knower of Aurbindo's works I just wanted to state that for Saraswati, Brahma is the consort usualy. But her other side is Matangi -The bestower of knowledge. Matangi is one of the ten mahavidyas and in a way represents Saraswati/Knowledge. Please let me know if you are more interested in Dasha mahavidya or Matangi. Jai Matangi... Jayanth

Guest guest
Namaste Jayanth. I am aware of Mother Matangi and the Dasamahavidyas, and am always interested to hear more about the Goddess in her many forms. My late Guru Maa stressed the importance of Mother Durga and her traditional family (Ganesha, Laxmi, Saraswati, Karrtik and Lord Shiva), and these deities are the ones I primarily follow. -- -Santo "Aum Shanti Shanti Shantih."
