Guest guest
Hi everyone: Thanks for letting me participate in the group. I really love being able to open up my email and see all these beautiful postings that uplift me daily. Some of you know me, I'm one of Guruji's devotees, and you might know that I'm Native American.I would like to share with you all how Mother makes experience in your life helpful to understanding others and her purposes. I've been living on and around a Native American reservation now for around three years, all the while keeping Mother's peetham here. What I want to share is that I had no idea how similar Sri Vidya is to many Native spiritual traditions. 1). The Cherokee and many of the people who participate in what is called the Stomp Dance tradition have believed for centuries in the aspect of God as feminine. I have spoken with an elder who showed me something and explained that it meant the feminine protects the man who protects the child. 2). In chapter 16 verse 1 the Gita states: Fearlessness, purity of heart, steadfastness in jnana and yoga, beneficence, self-restraint, sacrifice, spiritual study, austerity and uprightness, { It goes on to say these qualities are in one born with the divine heritage.} The Sun Dance tradition of the Plains Native American people believes in the tapas of participating in the Sun Dance will bring about a change in a person so that they may have these qualities. We also believe that a woman called the White Buffalo Calf Woman brought them all their sacred ceremonies, including the Sun Dance, for their spiritual purification. GREAT, huh! It is just like Mother to be all over the world, helping out everyone in a way that is best for them and that they understand. Guest guest
Hi Samatmika, I have a cousin here in India, who was all set to spend a month at a Native American Reserve, I am not sure if he made it, but I know if he has not as yet, he will. The way I see it is that your people were nature people, like the Vedic people of India. You have respect for 'nature" and your 'elders'. Your dance is most enchanting ! I am curious, please can ou help me get some clarity. Your names, like White Buffalo Calf Woman. Why 'white', why 'buffalo', why particularly a ''calf', and why a 'woman'. What is the name supposed to convey, qualities, feelings, ?? Please i really wish to understand. Guest guest
Hi Red: I will tell you the story that is told in the Native American Inipi Ceremony (Sweat lodge). There were two brothers traveling through the plains out in the wilderness together. As they were walking along, they saw in the distance a woman of the greatest beauty they had ever seen. As they watched her, she changed into a beautiful white buffalo calf, then a beautiful yellow calf, then a red, then a black; into the white again, finally changing back into the beautiful woman. The first brother wanted to possess her and her power and said, "Brother, here is this beautiful woman out here in the middle of nowhere, where no one can hear or save her. Let us both go and rape her." The second brother, who was younger said,"No Brother, we cannot do this thing; it is wrong, she is WAKAN (this means Holy in Lakota). The first brother would not listen and went up to the woman to grab her and rape her. As he approached her, She enveloped both of them in a cloud. When the cloud disappeared, the first brother was a pile of bones being eaten by maggots. To the second brother she said, since you made the right choice I know that I want to give you 7 sacred ceremonies to teach your people. I will come to your people to help them. This is how the Plains people got their 7 sacred ceremonies. And one of the ceremonies, carrying the sacred pipe, the original pipe she gave is still being carried by a Lakota elder. To me, the meaning of the story is that Mother helps all people in traditions and ways that are best for them. The reason why she appeared as a buffalo calf is one of innocence and self sacrifice, since the Plains people greatly honor the buffalo as a spiritual being given to them by the Creator to sustain them on this planet. the for colors of the calf mean the four directions--that she went through all four directions, just as we do. I believe that she is saying that we should be in a state of innocence and self-sacrifice; but also not alllow evil to overtake us. The first man wants to use her innocence and self-sacrifice to abuse her and take her power. By trying to do this he destroys himself. The second man honored her, her innocence, vunerability and realized that it is wrong to try to take power over others, and that all things are holy. That is why he was worthy to carry her message and be taught the ceremonies for the people's help. Sounds just like Sri Rajarajeshwari, doesn't it? Guest guest
My dearest Samatmika, What a beautiful story, and so well told that my mind was transported to this miracle taking place on the undulating plains of the Lakota people. White Buffalo Calf Woman is always there, like the beautiful compassionate Quan Yin, my sweet beautiful Kali, enchanting and so easy to embrace in surrender. Please can you tell me why the colors White, Yellow, Red and Black represent the four cardinal directions. Are they north, south, east and west or are some other directions indicated, and why are these particular colors addressed, and not any four others. What is the significance of these colors please, and why do they come in this particular order and why is white the color immediately after and before the human form is taken. What is the significance of the cloud, and why white ? Why maggots and the skeleton, why not simply the skeleton, why even a skeleton ? Please, what is the inner significance of this story. Are you able to share this. If yes, wonderful I learn, if not beautiful – you have still blessed me with a beautiful vision, and the truth will seep in I know J There is some nice stuff on the web too. Thank you for the introduction :-D Is there a web-link to the Seven Sacred Ceremonies, so I can try to learn a bit more about this other sacred form of our sweet Goddess. I would love to share with you from the book New Man for the New Millennium by Osho - page 34 onwards. It is about the ‘path’ to divinity, the cleaning of the altar, the room, the heart, a spotless receptacle for White Buffalo Calf Woman, Kali, Christ, Allah, Jehovah, Krishna, Shiva or for whoever/whatever we peal the onion – ha ! expect tears too ! http://www.osho.nl/New-Osho-NL/EnglBooks/Dhammapada.htm
Guest guest
Look up White Buffalo Calf Woman, or Lame Deer. Lame Deer was a holy man in the last century. Thanks for writing back. If you ever want to visit US and see some ceremonies, let me know. There is one in April in Phoenix. Guest guest
My dearest Samatmika, Thank you. If I could ever come and be or live with your people, even if for a while, I know I will have much to thank my sweetest Kali for. I did do a bit of searching. http://www.merceronline.com/Native/native05.htm . Will look up Lame Deer. I too find the birth of 'Miracle' so significant. Other than your immediate people, Native Americans coming together and also retaining/regaining custody of more of your sacred lands; now even an Indian in the US and this Indian in India have touched. I am excited to see the results of more searches. Found 20 pages of Native American art http://www.firstpeople.us/FP-Html-Pictures/Pictures-Myths-page1.html , so nice :-D Thank you very much for showing me my sweetest Kali in the form of the lovely wakan Ptesan-Wi In love, Red sue mcniel <samatmikadevi wrote: Look up White Buffalo Calf Woman, or Lame Deer.
