Dear Masters

I couldn't agree more with you in the matter of mantra prayoga. I had in my

message to Max mildly warned that the mantra he was suggesting was for some

other purpose and an expert in mantra shastra be consulted.

I see big mantras being dished out here very casually for the purpose of

prayoga. I am from a tradition that one needs proper initiation even for

reciting Durga saptashati; then where is the question of using navakshari

(navaarna) etc., as one pleases. Even gayatri needs initiation. Brahmin families

in South India spend tens of thousands of rupees on upanayan samskara.

I had heard in my childhood that Lalita Sahasranamam itself should be received

from a Guru as it is part of mantra shastra and one cannot afford to

mispronounce the namas. we still receive it like that.

One more caution: Lord Shiva is fond of telling Mother Parvati whenever he

expounds a mantra, "Gopaniyam hi etad; swayoniriva, Parvati."

If one is in distress and uninitiated, one should take the help of a pundit

and have him recite Durga saptashati, or do mantra japa or Soundaryalahari in

the proper way. Taittariya says, "Sheekshaam vyaakhyaasyaamah; varnaswarah;

maatraabalam; saamasantaanah; ityuktah sheekshaadhyaayah," to show the

importance of pronounciation, pauses, stress on the right syllable etc. All this

is required to bring to the fore the right Bhava.

May wise counsel prevail on people (which includes me as I keep quoting veda

mantras often in my posts though not for prayoga).

Exactly right, Mahahrada.

Moreover, it is good for non-kaula not to even think of Bagala and similar

Vidyas.

But U know, "vinAsha kAle viparIta buddhiH"... Hope this is not the case :)
