Guest guest
MUMBAI (Apr 08, 2006): 'Jai Santoshi Maa' was the second biggest hit of 1975, it was during this year that Ramesh Sippy's 'Sholay' and Vijay Sharma's 'Jai Santoshi Maa' had hit the theatres. While the former boasted of ace stars, the latter could not even make news because it had only newcomers. Sholay's success was predictable, but everyone was surprised when Jai Santoshi Maa was declared a hit. When the managing director of Percept Picture Company Shailendra Singh happened to watch the film again recently, he thought of remaking the film. "I observed that Vijay Sharma's 'Jai Santoshi Maa' had all the ingredients that the Indian audience wants to watch in a Hindi film," says Singh. "'Jai Santoshi Maa' spoke about relationships, of sacrifice, and most importantly, it made us aware of a gift that every human on this earth possesses: experiencing the presence of God. It was a 'Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jaayenge' on steroids." Singh believed that a film like this could do without having big stars play the lead roles. "We want the characters to be believable. We want the audience to identify with them. That's the reason why we have opted for newcomers. If we sign a celebrity for this film, then the actor will overshadow the film and I don't want that to happen. For instance, 'Malamaal Weekly' did not require the presence of stars. Paresh Rawal's presence was enough to rope in the audience." Singh informs that only actress Vedika Kumar from the South has been confirmed as a part of the cast. "We have yet to select the other artistes for the film. However, Hema Malini will not play the title role," Singh says. He adds, "No expenses will be spared to give the film a different look." Sulekha, who earlier scripted 'Hanuman' for Percept Films, will pen the story for this film too. Meanwhile, a treat for all Santoshi Maa devotees only on the small screen for the first time. Do not miss the premiere of 'Jai Santoshi Maa' in the last week of May 2006, on Star Gold. Guest guest
Namaste DB: Thank you for sharing this. Santoshi Mata is a fascinating example of the evolution of a modern goddess within our own lifetimes. As an ABCD with a deep love of mythology, I look forward to seeing another version of this film. Jai Santoshi Mata. -- -Santo "Aum Shanti Shanti Shantih."
