Prana ("chi" in Chinese and "ki" in Japanese) or

life-energy sustains us, it is in the air that we breathe,

the food and water that we consume, and in sunlight

that nourish us. Prana links the 3 bodies and flows in

the 72'000 nadis (channels or conduits) of the astral

body which corresponds to the physical body's 350,000

nerve passages. Prana has 2 main currents, apana

(efferent) and udana (afferent). Manipulation of life-energy

is called pranayama, kriya yoga pranayama aims to

neutralize apana and udana impulses. "Offering the inhaling

breath into the exhaling breath and offering the

exhaling breath into the inhaling breath, the yogi

neutralizes both breaths; thus he releases prana from the

heart and brings life force under his control."

(Bhagavad Gita 4:29, Yoganandaji's) "Who knoweth not in all

these that the hand [power] of the LORD[universality]

hath wrought this? In whose hand is the soul

[individuality] of every living thing, and the breath

[life-force] of all mankind." (Job12:9&10) "All in whose

nostrils was the breath of life [unable to re-direct the

flow of prana], of all that was in dry land, died."

(Genesis 7:22) "Liberation can be attained by that

pranayama which is accomplished by disjoining the course of

inspiration and expiration" (Yoga Sutras 2:49)
