Guest guest
Thanks, Javra, for your reply to my previous posting. Do you practise ujayyi breathing during your Iyengar practise?

I should have been more clear when I mentioned the class I am taking. It is an introductory class, offerred through Campus Rec at the University where I work, and is literally called "Hatha Yoga". (The teacher has mentioned that she has been trained in 'Iyengar' yoga, but her class is quite different from ones I have taken from a different teacher who teaches at a different studio.) I am guessing that this is simply a name chosen to be recognizable to laymen, just as 'Power yoga' is often used in reference to Ashtanga Vinyasa yoga. Of course, maybe the naming of this class suggests we won't be exploring pranayama and other aspects of yoga beyond the somatic! (Both of the major yoga studios in Calgary use 'better' terminology in reference to classes, by the way.) At any rate, I have seen enough debates about the term "Hatha Yoga" that I should have known better than to have mentioned it in my post! :-)
Guest guest
Sometimes I practice Ujayi throughout the day and during my personal Iyengar practice. But I don't do it in Iyengar class because of the intense Darth Vader effect.I generally try to do each practice separately and purely as it was taught to me.The results are good: the benefits of each style are starting to show up in the other!Increased stamina and power during Iyengar (so I can concentrate better on form ,alignment and general intelligent awareness of my body) and much better understanding and practice of form and alignment during Ashtanga so as to avoid injuries (very important- especially for the repetitive stress kind of injuries that don't go BOOM-you're injured, but creep up on you after months or years because of misalignment, preexisting musculoskeletal imbalances and plain old sloppy form) and be able to concetrate more on my locks, breathing and drishti.

What's up with Power Yoga, anyway?

In Beryl Birch's book it's Ashtanga Vinyasa but in Bryan Kest's videos it's definitely NOT!
