Guest guest
I have what I think is the 'second edition' of Lino Miele's ashtanga yoga book, it has a blue dust jacket. In this version the postures are shown with line drawings. I understand that in the latest version the postures are shown using 'real' pictures. Does anyone know if the text itself has changed any in the new version, or is it just the same text with new pictures? Also, are the pictures significantly better than the line drawings? Thanks. Guest guest
The 3rd edition of Lino Miele’s book contains basically the same as the 2nd. The major changes are new spellings of some of the asana names + translation of the asana names into English. Addition of a transliteration and translation of the Surya namaskara mantra (Bhadram karnebhihi – also (partially) included in Yoga Mala). The lay out has been changed, so that it clearly shows the difference of counting for practice with ”full vinyasa” and ”half vinyasa”, and the benefits of yoga chikitsa have been moved to the corresponding asana instead of being placed in an appendix.

The 2nd edition contains only John Scott’s line drawings, where as the 3rd edition has both the line drawings (on the charts showing the sequences) and photographes. Whether photos or drawings are better (for what purpose?) is hard to judge, but in the 3rd edition you get both. Any way none og them will be enough to substitute for learning the asanas from a teacher. ”This book is a technical guide, only to be used as a reference to supplement the study of Astanga Yoga”, as the introduction says.

I suppose you asked your question to find out if it is worth while buying the new edition. Well, probably not, but it depends on you: The new edition is a better book, but the basics are excactly the same. (It would be a much better buy to get a hold of Lino’s new video, it contains the same as the book, showing the complete primary series breath for breath including calling out the vinyasa numbers.)
