Guest guest
Hi! I'd like to start doing Ashtanga via book (don't have VCR). I have no experience. Can you recommend a book that will show me how to do the beginning series?

Thank you.
Guest guest
There are a couple of great books to choose from.
Yoga Mala, can be obtained from Eddie Stern at Patanjali Yoga Shala, 611 Broadway, Suite 203, NYC, NY 10012; Tel (212) 982-0753; Fax (212) 966-3947. or
Ashtanga Yoga "The practice manual" by David Swenson (800)684-6927 to order.

Yoga Mala is basically the primer to Astanga Yoga , introducing the fundamentals to the practice, though only features the primary series. One may consider it a bible.
Swenson's book is a recent release and, although it doesn't cover the therapeutic aspects of each asana(yoga chikitsa), it does cover many of the variations to each asana since most poses are very challenging to the beginner.
However...
Sri K. Pattabhi Jois, the system's founder, suggests you stop when you reach a pose you cannot do then proceed to finishing asanas or more specifically, padmasana for a 50-100 breath count of meditation and savasana. Listen to your body and you be the judge. You should find a teacher to get you started. Hope this helps. Good Luck!
