feet: arch enemies?

I have been practicing ashtanga for a year, about

3-4 times a week. Recently (the last 2 months) during

the standing postures, I have been feeling tremendous

pain in my feet, specifically in the muscles that

support my arches. Afterward there is no soreness, but

the pain has become significant enough to become

tremendously distracting, if not disturbing. I have been

concentrating on proper foot alignment, and don't suffer from

arch pain any other time. The last couple of weeks

I've cut back on my practice, but that hasn't seemed

to help. I'm trying not to "fear" the pain, and just

trust the practice. But I was hoping someone might have

gone through this and can offer insight on ways to

alleviate (or work through) the discomfort.

I used to get quite bad cramp (although

definitely not "tremendous pain") in the arch of my right

foot during practice.

I think it was because my

right knee was very tight from an old (pre-yoga)

injury, and because of the discomfort, tightness and

imbalance that caused I had tension elsewhere in the leg.

The problem has almost entirely gone away as my knee

has opened.

YOu say you are concentrating on

proper foot alignment - are you keeping your weight as

even as possible between the inside and outside edges

of your feet, and between the heels and the balls of

the feet? And relaxing your toes, not trying to grip

the mat? (I did that a lot, until an iyengar teacher

pointed it out to me)
