Guest guest
In reply to the debate about practising with students. In a class teaching situation it wouldn't work. But as to being in the same classes or informally together what is the problem? In yoga everyone is learning and there is no perfection. One of the best advices I heard was that the breath is always there while the asanas change from day to day, so as long as you are with the breath it's all okay.

Also practising with the teacher helps you as a student to know where they are at. In the Yoga Tree BKS Iyengar suggests you look at the teachers practice that helps you to make up your mind about the teacher....BUT...it's not just about hard technical asanas it's also about grace and awareness and feeling. I first saw Astanga watching John Scott in a practice in Kovalam and the meditiveness of it was what made it really something. Derek Ireland could also spellbind a room just through that presence in the practice....and that presence is there even if the pose is trikonasana or dog down.

A final word as to dissing teachers. I don't know why SPW is so down on Larry S, does he owe him money or something. I did larry's course and while it didn't teach me much more about asanas it did give me a lot of confidence. It's Yoga is great with beginners and the policy is to let them find their own feet. If yoga sticks the rest will come later. Anyway you don't have to stay in the same teacher you can always bow thank them and move on....which is how zen buddhism works it too.

William
