Guest guest
does anyone know if the place where BNS Iyengar teaches is close to Ashtanga Institute in Lakshmipuram? How far is it? Does BNS speak English? Does any woman study with him?
Guest guest
BNS Iyengar teaches in a corner of the Mysore Art Gallery palace building which is central Mysore; I thought he was a bit creepy when I talked to him, just a gut feeling. Weird eyes. He wouldn't tell me anything about how he taught until I came with the USS and committed for a full month. I later heard from other people that he wasn't so great with women & was heavy on the intellectual side of things. When I asked Patthabi Jois about him he said Who? Who? B K S Iyengar? then claimed never to have heard of him. I'd recommend going instead to Auroville and learning from Karen & gerard.
Guest guest
BNS Iyengar teaches close to the Kavori Lodge where most yoga students initally stay. Someone at the hotel can take you there or ask around. Off in the opposite direction from Kavori, and a bit farther, is the Lakshmipuram neighborhood where Jois teaches. So, yes, they are close to each other. I'd say within an easy biking distance. BNS Iyengar does speak English and has mostly Indian yogis as well as some devoted westerners who return to him each year. I am a woman and have studied with him and found no problems. He is compassionate and when I was sore he backed off from pushing into asanas. I never thought that I would get hurt during my practices. He has been teaching Ashtanga for many years and is only really known by word of mouth from people who have traveled to Mysore. He gives a bit of Indian philosophy in the beginning; kind of welcoming you into the community of rishi's but other than that, most of time you're just doing your practice.

Namaste,
Yeshe
Guest guest
I guess it all depends on who you speak to.

Andrew Eppler, one of the very best astanga pracitioners I've ever met, was a student of BNS. His experience with the man, his teaching, and the general scene of the teaching was completely positive.
