Guest guest
I have two weeks of vacation in July and am thinking about going to S. California to practice yoga. I was hoping to get some recommendations of places to practice and maybe even inexpensive places to stay. Thanks.
Guest guest
I can recommend Tim Miller in Encinitas or Chuck Miller in Santa Monica. Both are very good but you may want to call and check to see if either of them will be around in July. They are listed in www.astanga.com

I believe there is camping on nearby beaches. That would probably be the cheapest but there may be cheap hotels but it's tourist season!

Namaste,
Yeshe
Guest guest
Regarding California in July... Tim Miller's place in Encinitas is great, as someone already mentioned. So is Chuck's (Yoga Works in Santa Monica.) However I would like to add that So Cal can get very hot in July and I would recommend that you try Encinitas which is about an hour's drive south of LA and 1/2 hour north of San Diego and is MIGHTY BEAUTIFUL. It is a little town right on the Pacific with a couple of good veggie restaurants and bookstores. Also, there is a beautiful Self Realization Fellowship center there with gardens and a coastal walk. There are two state beaches with campgrounds. Try looking them up on the web. Tim has e-mail and you could write and ask him about other acommodation options. AND... if you are in LA, go to AHIMSA YOGA in Silverlake. Noah and Kimberly teach there and they are great. They are also listed on the Ashtanga website and they have their own web site: http://www.ashtangayogashala.com Have fun!

P.S. The beach in Encinitas is beautiful and has lots of seals, especially a little south toward San Diego.
Guest guest
Hi Johdemmitt, these are my ol' stomping grounds and after seven months,3 days 2 hours (but who's counting!!!), boy do I miss it.

Like the other replies, go to Encinitas and Cardiff By the Sea - I'm totally biased but they are really wonderful beach communities that comparatively speaking don't get too busy. Swamis, just a few blocks south of Tim Miller's Ashtanga Centre is a gorgeous beach - you'll see great surfing, beautiful scenery and it just has an all around groovy vibe there.

Re yoga- you're in for a treat in this area. Of course you'll go the Ashtanga Centre - Sunday morning primary series is usually very crowded but is fun for that reason as well. If at all possible, take a class with Dennis Dean- yogi supreme - a wonderful combination of knowledge, humbleness (is that a word?) and grace.. He teaches at the Ashtanga Centre and at a nice gym called Frogs where his Friday night Ashtanga improv classes are a real happening. His website is http://www.ashtangayoga.net/

I would also try to take a class with Manju Jois (Pattabhi Jois' son) who according to the class list (http://www.ashtanga.com/html/classes.html#socal) is based in Cardiff. Does anyone know anything about his classes? I saw them posted after I left and would love to know where he teaches, what he's like, etc. Many of the students at Ashtanga Centre are teachers and I'm sure they'll put you on to some cool places to take a class if you need more - good peeps all around there...

There was a nice little new age shop called Heaven and Earth on Highway 101, a super old movie theatre La Paloma which rattles like crazy when the train goes past. Food wise, plenty of great places to wine and dine, If you can, go to Happy Hour at the bar at the Beach House Restaurant - half priced food and a killer view right on the shore.25E cafe is also a funky place to get something to eat - right across the way from the Centre...

The San Elijo Campground is the closest one to the centre - maybe a mile down the highway -it can get booked out during major holidays, but I'll bet you can get in. Otherwise there are a few motels on Highway 101 and around where you should be able to find a good price.

Have a wonderful time and please blow Cardiff a kiss from me.

S
Guest guest
One note: I don't believe Manju is still in SoCal. I believe he's back in India.
Guest guest
Manju Jois was in New York a few weeks ago teaching at Eddie Stern's. I don't know where he is now but it is likely that he is still there. Check ashtanga website for address and phone.
Guest guest
Thanks everyone for the great info. I'll let you know how it was when I get back.
Guest guest
Manju will be teaching at Eddie Stern's Patanjali Yoga Shala at least through the fall. If Eddie decides to go to Mysore in the fall, Manju will continue teaching in NYC. If you have the opportunity to take a class with Manju, do NOT pass it up.

peace,

michael
