I'm writing for my wife, who nine days ago gave

birth to our little girl, Faith. (My wife would write

herself but English isn't her first language.)

She

would like to hear anecdotes and ideas on when and how

she should start practicing again. She was told that

she should wait 3 months but she doesn't want to wait

that long. Any ideas and suggestions?
She had a

normal pregnacy without an episiotomy or a tear - chalk

that up to yoga.

Thanks, Dan and Injil

I did yoga after 3 pregnancies ( and breastfeed

for 10 years!). It's definitely best to put off the

strenuous postures, postures that compress your abdomen,

and working up a sweat until after you completely

stop bleeding and are internally healed. You need give

your body a chance to rebuild and repair- this is so

hard for us over- achieving westerners. If you do this

for yourself you will be healed in probably 1-3 weeks

but if you don't, could be 3-6 weeks or more before

you stop bleeding. Believe it or not the world won't

stop spinning if you rest and relax and get to know

your baby.
After that, just start up gradually-

but don't push it, okay? Take lots of naps, be as

indolent as you can be after all those every 2 hour

feedings in the night. It's a short, sweet time in your

life if you relax and enjoy it and STOP ALL THAT

OVERACTIVITY, yes, even yoga can fall into that catagory. Yes,

it's hard to look in the mirror and see that extra

poundage, but as your baby grows, he or she will eat more

and weight loss will be easier. If you're nursing a

six month old, the weigh will melt like never before

in your life. Hope this helps you- enjoy your

beautiful baby!!
