Guest guest
Primary series is about 24 postures preceded by about 18 "warmup" postures and followed by about 15 "finishing" postures. You can count them different ways depending on whether you count the variations of each one. Some teachers may leave some out or add some in. So its 60 or 70 postures and takes about an hour and a half to two hours to get through it at 5 breaths per posture. If you have practiced any type of hatha yoga you will find many of the postures familiar. Most or all of them would be found in BKS Iyengar's Light on Yoga. As for inverions, primary series includes shoulderstand, headstand, and handstand. Actually I think all of those are part of the finishing postures. If you look at my list of ashtanga videos, I have a link for more details on a couple of the videos, which includes a list of the postures on those videos. Also if you go to It's Yoga's website, http://www.itsyoga.com, they have a good ashtanga manual which they have made available online, you can just print it out and then you've got a book which covers primary series. Otherwise, I would certainly recommend getting ahold of a book or two and/or a video or two. And of course, if you can get to a class, that's the thing to do.
