Guest guest
I was talking to my husband, who took a Primary series class from a woman in Bali about a year ago. He told me that she suggested the insertion of a front-back split (don't know the Sanskrit name for the asana) as an optional asana in the Primary Series. I have never come across this suggestion in classes or books so am curious if anyone else has. I know this pose is part of one of the advanced series, however. But if it is an optional asana, where would it be inserted?
Guest guest
I believe you mean Hanumanasana. I have seen people go into Hanumanasana in the standing pose sequence between Utthita Parsvkonasana D and Parsvothanasana. I tried it too. I have seen practitioners include various other poses/variations in the standing sequence over the years and tried them myself. My advice: Before deviating from the original sequence establish your practice. Do it daily for a while in the proper way (I suggest at least a year) before changing anything. When you do, be very conscious of the fact that you are altering the practice and observe the effect carefully.
Guest guest
The insertion of hanumanasana and samokonosana is pretty standard among advanced students at the shala I frequent...it's not classically correct perhaps, but it's a nice preparation for uthita hasta padangustasana.

The way we do it is samo 5 breaths, H right leg forward 5 breaths, samo 5 breaths, H left leg forward 5 breaths, samo 5 breaths, jump to samasthitihi.

Safety tip: be real careful about moving from one posture to another with the legs so far apart. Guest guest
Doing this asana (hanumanasana) is a quick and effective way to tear a groin muscle if you're not yet ready for it. Get advice from a certified teacher before attempting it.

Be patient with yourself.
Guest guest
Thank you all for your replies, and don't worry about me. I have been dedicated to the first series for over a year, just started learning the second series, but have been doing basic hatha yoga for years before that. Yet, I am not yet flexible enough to do hanumanasana. The second series humbles any pride I had, too. Patience? What's that?

Hey Daniel, I think I met you in Bali last year--you are with Bali video, no? I was a friend of Joe's; my name is Sunshine. One day I came in to do that Mac tutorial.
